Shadows & Faces (Turkey, 2010)
Turkish with English Subtitles

Shadows and Faces (Turkish: Gölgeler ve Suretler) is a 2010 Turkish drama film, written and directed by Turkish Cypriot director Dervis Zaim, which tells the story of a young girl who is separated from her father, a Karagöz shadow play master, during the beginning of the conflict between Turks and Greeks in Cyprus in 1963. The film [...] premiered in competition at the 47th International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, where it won the Turkish Film Critics Association Award. It is the third and final part of a trilogy of films themed around traditional Turkish arts, which includes Waiting for Heaven (2006) and Dot (2008).

Career Workshop for Students: Professionalism in Europe

Guest Speaker: Sharon L. Stead, Director, State of Illinois West European Office, Brussels

The "Professionalism in Europe" event series aims at familiarizing students with European business customs to better prepare them for careers in Europe. Each event focuses on a specific European country and features expert presentations on such topics as protocol, greetings, titles, networking, professional correspondence, attire, and table manners. Invited speakers commonly include a native professional who discusses professionalism and business culture differences.

This workshop is part of the EUC's EU Day celebrations.

The Eleventh Annual European Union Day will feature João Vale de Almeida, Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to the United States, delivering the "State of the European Union Address."

In addition, EU Day will feature the 5th Annual EUC-ACDIS Transatlantic Security Symposium on March 29th and the Professionalism in Europe Workshop on March 28th.

Study Abroad in Verona

2012 SUMMER/FALL APPLICATION DEADLINE: April 1

Study Abroad Program in Verona, Italy

Study abroad in the "Fair city of Verona," Italy's fourth-most-visited city, located approximately two hours east of Milan and two hours west of Venice! The six-week summer program offers participants 7 hours of pre-approved credit.  Coursework includes Italian 101, supplemented by either Art History or Photography. Classes in Italian language levels 101 – 220 are available during the fall semester term.  Electives include Art History, Photography, Painting, and Introduction to *Italian Cinema (*instruction in Italian). Program excursions and optional wine-tasting and cooking classes supplement the curricular offerings.  Program housing includes both apartment and host family placement. The KULeuven-Illinois Experience: Encountering Europe through the Lens of Social Science

In collaboration with Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL), the University of Illinois has developed a study abroad program in Leuven, Belgium that provides you with unique intercultural learning opportunities in the social sciences. European and US students participate in common classes and curriculum as you explore the social and demographic transitions that accompany and underpin globalization. All students enroll in a core course on population and family dynamics from a life course perspective. To complement the core course, you select courses from several academic pathways, ranging from social science-specific specializations to a broader academic experience across the humanities, arts, science, and business. You can study abroad on the KULeuven-Illinois Experience during fall or spring semester.

Turkish Studies Website goes live!

The Turkish Studies website is now live to give information about Turkish Studies at UIUC. The website has been designed with the support of the EUC not only to inform the university community about Turkish language and culture and give course information for prospective students, but also to provide students of Turkish Studies with the links that will help them with self-study. Turkish Studies offers educational and cultural activities like symposium, lectures, movies nights, conversation tables and potluck. Make sure to check the website frequently to learn about a wide range of fun events and classes.
