Collaboration

  • The ADM Institute signed an MOU with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on October 26th to open doors for collaboration in capacity-building and technology transfer in South Asian postharvest value chains and rice cropping systems.

  • India’s Department of Food & Public Distribution and the Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) signed an MOU to create a center for capacity-building in postharvest management of foodgrains. The CWC will oversee training functions of the Indian Grain Storage Management and Research Institute (IGMRI).

  • The ADM Institute presented at the "Workshop on Post-Harvest Losses" hosted by Empraba in Brazil in late October. The event brought together researchers from Brazil and the United States who are working on reducing losses in the soybean supply chain. Attendees developed working groups focusing on four main areas: loss harvesting, transportation, storage, and public policy. (Portuguese) (English)

Figures

  • Managing Director of Business Consult Africa reports that Malawi loses K16 billion worth of maize annually, the equivalent of over $50 million USD, in postharvest losses estimated as high as 40% of the maize crop. Malawi’s Minister of Agriculture is unsure of the precise amount of loss, though admits it is very high. Smallholder farmers face challenges in accessing Malawi’s postharvest prevention mechanisms, such as subsidized pesticides and storage.
