    Welcome back!

Welcome back!

Summer heat is definitely still in the air, but our thoughts turn to the fall semester and the exciting start to a new academic year. The European Union Center resumes publication of our e-Weekly newsletter with a warm welcome to our faculty, staff, and students.

As we say hello to old and new friends, we also bid a farewell of sorts and congratulations to our Director since 2010, Professor Bryan Endres. Bryan was recently promoted to Interim Associate Provost for International Affairs and Interim Director of International Programs and Studies (IPS) at the University of Illinois. Although we will miss Bryan’s very active and accomplished leadership of the EU Center, we look forward to working closely with him in his new position and take heart that he will continue to provide guidance and support to the EUC in an oversight capacity. Meanwhile, IPS and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences are working to identify a new faculty director to lead the Center in its future endeavors.

Together with our highly energetic faculty, the EUC staff has been busy planning an exciting array of lectures, conferences, movies, and more for the fall. Recent developments have seen the accession to the EU of a 28th member country (Croatia), and the first round of negotiations between the EU and US on a new free trade agreement, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. The Center’s events this year will feature opportunities to hear about these and other diverse EU topics. Our events are open to the public, so please add them to your calendar, and look for updates in forthcoming e-Weekly issues and on the EU Center web site.

Each year, the EUC is able to use resources from our EU Center of Excellence and US Department of Education Title VI grants to make funding support and a variety of contests about the EU available to our individual affiliates. Be sure to check out our newly released Call for Grant Applications for details on all of the opportunities open to UI faculty and students, and off-campus scholars and educators. The deadline for the first set of competitions is September 30, so start working on your applications!

As usual, EUC was busy this past year seeking additional funding to develop new curricula and programming about the EU. We were pleased to learn recently that we have received another competitive EU grant, a Jean Monnet Module, for a new initiative on “Eastern Europe and EU Integration.” Keep an eye out for forthcoming information about the new course to be offered in the spring, lecture series, and other activities that this award will enable.

Many of you already keep up with the Center and the latest EU news through our Facebook page, EUC Blog, and Twitter feed. E-weekly will continue to highlight selected contributions to these social media. We also invite you to join our new LinkedIn group, which allows EUC affiliates to stay connected and follow each other’s professional developments.

As we look ahead to the upcoming academic year, the Center will continue to serve as a hub for research, teaching, and public engagement on the EU and transatlantic relations. Please feel welcome to share your ideas with us about new ways to serve that mission. In the mean time, we wish all of the EU Center’s many friends a productive and stimulating year to come!

-Matt Rosenstein, EU Center Associate Director

EUC Blog Highlights

Environment and Society in a Changing Arctic

You can find on the EUC blog a series of blog entries written by University of Illinois students who traveled during summer 2013 to Stockholm, Sweden and Svalbard, Norway to participate in the interdisciplinary course, “Environment and Society in a Changing Arctic,” provided by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and co-organized with KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Course participants from both universities learn about issues related to climate change and the Arctic, capped by an excursion to conduct field research near the Arctic Circle. This program is partially supported by the European Union Center through a European Union Center of Excellence grant, and is an initiative of the Illinois-Sweden Program for Educational Research Exchange (INSPIRE). Student blog entries also appear on the web site of the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat. Read more on the EUC blog.

As always, we invite you to join the conversation by leaving comments and sharing posts with others!

Internships

Scottish Development International -- Business Development Internship, Fall 2013, Chicago

Scottish Development International, a government funded organization, supports the Scottish economy by helping our companies grow their overseas markets and assisting international companies to set up and do business in Scotland. A GDP Global World Bank study recently classed us as the 'world's most consistently high performing investment promotion agency', and as a result of a significant increase in our international business development activities, applications are invited for a paid, full- or part-time internship position at SDI's office in downtown Chicago. The internship will begin in mid-September and conclude after approximately three months.

This is an exciting opportunity with emphasis on researching and identifying international business development opportunities and securing qualified appointments for existing staff members, through direct approaches involving companies and organizations located in the US Central Region.

Students who are eligible to receive class credit are encouraged to apply, though recent graduates will also be considered for the position. Find out more here.
