Announcing the EUC's 2013-14 Call for Grant Applications and Contests

Thanks to the European Union Center’s Department of Education Title VI Grant and the European Union Center of Excellence Grant from the European Union, the EUC is pleased to offer several funding opportunities to the University of Illinois (UI) community and beyond. Included in this announcement you will find calls for UI faculty, graduate students,  and undergraduate students, as well as opportunities for non-UI scholars of the EU and K-12 educators and students. For more information about the available grants including detailed requests for proposals and application instructions, please visit the EUC grants webpage.

The deadline for the first set of competitions is September 30, so start working on your applications!

Videoconference Panel Discussion: The German Elections: Outcomes and Impacts

The “Conversations on Europe” Videoconference series features some of the country’s top experts on the European Union. The series links presenters and participants via videoconferencing across several sites. This event is open to the public and audiences at all sites are able to ask questions of the experts. The series is hosted by the European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center at the University of Pittsburgh.

KuchinkeProfessor Peter Kuchinke Delivers Keynote at European High Education Conference

Professor Peter Kuchinke delivered a keynote address at the International Conference on European Higher Education in Vilnius, Lithuania, in early September. The conference marked the assumption of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and focused on the expansion and internationalization of European Higher Education within and outside of its 28 member states.

Kuchinke's talking points addressed the role of European universities for U.S. graduate study and research. In his presentation, he used the example of University of Illinois to explore student expectations, needs, and experiences of overseas study.

Kuchinke, a professor in the Department of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, serves as one of 25 U.S. and Canadian Ambassadors for PromoDoc, an initiative by the European Commission's Erasmus Mundus program.

The Illinois Strategic International Partnerships (ISIP) initiative, and its pilot project INSPIRE (Illinois-Sweden Program for Educational and Research Exchange) invite proposals from current faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for funding in support of collaborative research projects and/or cooperative educational programs that will strengthen our existing partnerships with  KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm University, and/or Karolinska Institutet.

IFE, a French not-for-profit educational organization, offers Field Study and Internship programs in Paris, Strasbourg and Brussels. The Field Study and Internship program makes use of the professional workplace as an ideal cross-road for encountering France, Belgium and Europe today, as well as an opportunity to carry out a field research project related to the student-intern's academic or career goals. The program includes intensive classroom preparation, a three-month, full-time internship chosen to match each student's objectives, a guided independent study on a topic closely tied to the intern's mission, and a structured framework of accompaniment throughout the semester. IFE works with students from all major fields and career tracks.

In collaboration with the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), the University of Illinois has developed a study abroad program in Leuven, Belgium that provides you with unique intercultural learning opportunities across the social sciences and humanities. European and US students participate in common classes and curriculum as you explore the social and demographic transitions that accompany and underpin globalization.

Conversation Table in Modern Greek: Logos

Meetings take place every second Thursday in Espresso Royale in Goodwin Str., Urbana, IL 61801, starting from September 19th, 2013. Students are invited to practice conversational Modern Greek with native speakers and get fluency. This is also an excellent opportunity for students from past years, members of the local Greek community and those with some knowledge of Modern Greek to maintain and refine their language skills.
