HOLIDAY EATING

Fall Break is fast approaching! Whether you are traveling home or staying on campus, be mindful before you eat so you won’t regret the bellyache later.  Instead of skipping your usual meals and snacks, balance heavy foods like casseroles and meat with lighter sides like green vegetables and fruit desserts. For more information on balanced meals and food safety for the holiday season, visit USDA’s www.choosemyplate.gov and www.foodsafety.gov.  You will also find great information on healthy ideas for groceries and COOKING ON A BUDGET, as well as VEGETARIAN OPTIONS!

Turkeys may be large and heavy — with the heftiest wild turkey weighing 37 pounds, but here are some surpring facts you may not know about Benjamin Franklin's favorite bird.  Did you know that turkeys prefer to sleep perched atop tree branches, where they are safe from predators?  Amazingly, wild turkeys can even fly for short bursts at speeds of up to 55 miles per hour!  Read other terrific turkey facts and appreciate more about Thanksgiving's misunderstood bird.
