News and Highlights for Faculty & Staff on the Urbana-Champaign Campus  |  November 2014

Thank You for Your Commitment to Our Students

As the sudden drop in temperatures and the early sunsets of the past weeks remind us – this year is moving quickly. This is particularly evident in our classrooms as papers, projects, exams and deadlines approach.

This is a time when our commitment to teaching and our leadership in exploring all of the avenues of learning truly shine at Illinois. And it is also a great time to highlight this fall’s release of “An Illinois Sampler: Teaching and Research on the Prairie” by the University of Illinois Press. Co-edited by our own Antoinette Burton and former colleague Mary-Ann Winkelmes, this is a fascinating compilation of essays by our own faculty members on the intersection of research with teaching. It is both a guide to new avenues of exploration and a celebration of teaching that is only found at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

During these increasingly hectic weeks, I thank you for your efforts, your enthusiasm and your dedication – in and out of the classroom –  to delivering a transformative, educational experience to all our students.

With Gratitude,
Ilesanmi Adesida, Provost

Business and Governance Plan for College of Medicine

Chancellor Phyllis Wise and I are pleased to share with you the business plan for the proposed University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Medicine. The document contains detailed financial information as well as a governance structure that was created in consultation with the Academic Senate. The full business plan can be downloaded here. A summary of this document is also available here. Both of these documents as well as the initial feasibility study for the college can be found at http://strategicplan.illinois.edu. At their November 13 meeting, the Board of Trustees formally approved a resolution directing President Easter to gather more information about the current state, the challenges and the options regarding the future of medical education for the university - including the new College of Medicine. The Board has asked for this report by March. We are continuing to work with our campus faculty and the Academic Senate to ensure that the plans for the college are consistent with our shared governance principles and with the mission of our institution.
