Important Solicitation Reminder
 

If a company or organization visits your apartment to sell a service of any kind, please tell them that solicitation is not permitted on University property, including our community. Recently, we have learned that energy companies, in particular, have been coming to residents' doors to speak with them about switching providers; it is important to let them know that they are not permitted to come door to door. We ask that you do not provide them with any of your personal information. If you have any concerns, feel free to contact the Family & Graduate Housing Office.

 
Calling All Cooks: International Food Festival
 

Our annual International Food Festival is approaching soon! Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 10 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Orchard Downs Community Center (500 West George Huff Drive). Share food and music while learning about other cultures and meeting new people— the perfect ingredients for a wonderful afternoon! Spouses Information Session
 

Attentional international spouses: please join us on Wednesday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. for an International Spouses Information Session held in the Community Center at Orchard Downs (500 West George Huff Drive). Erin Schiller and Cheryl Hinkel from International Student and Scholar Services, and Community Aide Maribel Montes Zuluaga will host this session. You will learn more about the service offered by ISSS, and receive an overview of the most common dependent visa statuses. There will be activities and resources for spouses and children. Light refreshments will be served.

 
Fall Semester Birthday Celebration
 

Are you a Goodwin-Green resident with a birthday during the fall semester? We want to celebrate you! On Friday, October 16 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. we will be celebrating fall birthdays in the Goodwin-Green Lounge. After the Friday social, we invite you to stay and join us for this fun birthday celebration. Everyone is welcome. We will be having cake!

Sewing Room

The Sewing Room is open on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Learning Resource Center (Orchard Downs apartment 2044-A). Sewing machines and other equipment including scissors, pins, measuring tape, and thread are available for residents to use. The Sewing Room monitor is Tyra Brown.

Welcome to the World

Babies are a sign of hope and bring much joy to our lives. At Family & Graduate Housing we would like to welcome your newborn to our community with a small gift. Parent-Child Playgroup

Come play and learn with us! Parent-Child Playgroup will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the Family Resource Center (Orchard Downs apartment 1834-A). Caregivers and children of ages five and under participate in fun and educational activities, such as crafts, music, story time, and snacks. Free Nutrition Workshops

Learn how to plan meals on a budget and prepare healthy meals for you and your family. Come for free food, incentives, recipes, and to earn a certificate from the U of I Extension Office. This 9-week course will occur on Mondays from September 15 through November 10, from 1:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m. at the Learning Resource Center (Orchard Downs apartment 2044-A). Contact Brittney G. Chicago Bus Trip: October 3

Want to get away for the day? Join Family & Graduate Housing on Saturday, October 3 as we visit the “Windy City”—Chicago! We will be shopping at Water Tower Mall along Michigan Avenue and visiting the Chinatown neighborhood. We will depart from the Family & Graduate Housing Office (FGH) at 6:30 a.m. and arrive back at Orchard Downs at approximately 9:00 p.m. Registration begins Monday, September 14 at 9:00 a.m. Please register at http://go.illinois.edu/ChicagoBusTrip. Halloween Birthday Bingo

Were you born in October? Then we have a birthday party for you! Halloween Dinner & Movie Teen Night

Pumpkin Carving & Decorating
 
Halloween will soon be here and jack-o-lanterns are everywhere! Come create your own jack-o-lantern pumpkin on Satuday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m. at the Orchard Downs Community Center (500 West George Huff Drive). Bringing your own pumpkin is encouraged as limited pumpkins, stencils, and tools will be limited. The program is for all ages, however, children must be supervised. Spooky Story-Time and Craft Night
 
Please join us at the Orchard Downs Community Center (500 West George Huff Drive) on Thursday, October 29 at 6:30 p.m. for Halloween story-time and trick-or-treat bag decorating in preparation for Halloween! Women's Tea Time Support Group
 
Come join us for tea and conversation. The Women's Tea Time Support Group is a comfortable space for women to bond and learn new skills while supporting each other. There will be bi-weekly workshops on a variety of topics such as art, cooking, stress-management, parenting and more. This group will meet every other Thursday beginning October 1 at 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Family Resource Center (1834-A). Childcare will be provided. International Movie Night
 
An International Movie night will be held on Wednesday, October 14 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Orchard Downs Community Center (500 West George Huff Drive). Homecoming Tailgate

We will be having a tailgate to celebrate the University of Illinois Homecoming. Not quite sure what a tailgate or Homecoming is? Come out to the Orchard Downs (500 West George Huff Drive) behind the Family & Graduate Housing Office on Saturday, October 24 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and see for yourself! We will be having tailgate food! Everyone is welcome.

Registration for St. Louis Trip

If you are interested in attending the St. Louis trip on Saturday, November 7, your chance to sign up is almost here! Online registration for the trip will open on Monday, October 12 at http://go.illinois.edu/StLouisBusTrip. The ticket seat prices will be $15 for adults and $10 for children 3 years and older. Children 3 and younger who sit on their parents' laps will be free.

Circus and Acrobats Performance at Krannert Center

The National Circus and Acrobats of the People's Republic of China will be performing "Peking Dream" on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Krannert Center for Performing Arts (Foellinger Great Hall). On behalf of Krannert, all residents have the opportunity to attend the show at a discounted price of $10 per ticket. Residents should have received notice by email and register for tickets by September 27 through an online Google document. Health and Wellness Programs
 

MCHC Health Club Registration

The Multicultural Health Center (MCHC) will be launching its year-round health club and we encourage residents to register! The Health Club consists of a group of residents who are interested in improving health awareness and wellness for themselves and their neighbors. Residents will participate in special programs constructed to improve their health and physical activity. If you are interested, email our MCHC GA Kelechi Lamberts at klamber4@illinois.edu.

Walk/Jog/Run Group

Attention families and residents of all ages: the MultiCultural Health Center will be having another Walk/Jog/Run group on Wednesday, October 7 at 5:30 p.m. Families have the option of walking or running with their children and friends around the Orchard Down neighborhood complex. Everyone is invited. Running is NOT mandatory. We will meet at the MCHC and then go for our walk/run. For more information or questions contact Kelechi Lamberts at klamber4@illinois.edu.

Winter Survival Information

Is this your first time experiencing winter? Don't know what to wear or what to buy to prepare for the cold weather ahead? The Family & Graduate Housing wil be having a winter survival informational with the McKinley Health Center to help our residents with their preparation for winter. This informational will take place on Monday, October 12 at 6:00 p.m. in the Orchard Downs Community Center (500 West George Huff Drive). Learn how to take care of yourself and your children when the cold weather arrives so that you can have a fun and enjoyable winter experience. MultiCultural Health Center
 

Location: 2040-A Orchard Street

The MCHC works to deliver culturally sensitive illness prevention and health services to the families of the Family and Graduate Housing Community. Services are provided on a first come, first served basis.

Clinical Services: The clinic will be staffed with a physician and/or a nurse practitioner. Services will include but are not limited to general health concerns such as colds or other respiratory infections, physical exams, referrals to community services and more.

Clinic hours will be updated on a weekly basis on the MCHC voicemail to reflect clinical services that week. Please call (217) 265-6267.

HeRMES: Every Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Doors open at 5:30. 

WIC Hours: Friday, October 2 and Friday, October 16, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. 

CCCHC Services: Champaign County Christian Health Center is a non-profit clinic in our community located at 507 S. Second St. Suite 2E in Champaign, with a satellite office at the MultiCultural Health Center by appointment only. Please contact CCCHC through the appointment line, (217) 402- LOVE (5683), if you need assistance with primary care. Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Services: WIC services are provided for women, infants and children and are offered by the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District. Services for WIC participants include supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, counseling, screenings and referrals to other health services, welfare and social services, and immunizations for children. (Note: Clients who are receiving coupons can only pick up their coupons from the MCHC office on the 6th and 12th months. The coupons sent on the first 3 month and the 9th month must be picked up at the C-UPHD office. Clients must also make sure to register on the WIC website in order to make themselves eligible to pick up WIC coupons when available at the MCHC prior to pick up so it can be delivered to the MCHC for pick up).

Office Hours: Office hours at the MCHC will be on Mondays and Wednesdays (1 - 4 p.m.), Tuesdays (2 -5 p.m.), and Thursdays and Fridays (11 a.m. - 2 p.m.). Feel free to stop by for baby weigh-ins or come and pick up some beneficial health information handouts on winter safety, pre-natal health, or common health questions.

Pest Control
 

The 3rd floor in 1107 Green and the 6th floor of 300 Green will be inspected in October. Treatment will be performed only as needed; twenty-four hour advanced notice will be given prior to treatment. Daniels Hall Desk
 

The Daniels Hall Desk, located at 1010 West Green Street, has various equipment available for residents to use free of charge. Need a vacuum cleaner to tidy up your room? Need a bicycle pump to fill up your tires? Then stop by the Daniels Hall Desk, open 24 hours a day to check out any of the following equipment: vacuums, bicycle pumps, a battery charger, a tool box and snow shovels.
