Race, Globalization, and Education Lecture Series: “Transcultural teens: performing youth identities in French cités”
Speaker: Chantal Tetreault, Michigan State University
Chantal Tetreault is a linguistic and cultural anthropologist whose recent work has primarily focused on issues of migration and social change in France. Dr. Tetreault’s current project addresses the interactional styles whereby French adolescents of Algerian descent construct and express their emergent identities as Arab Muslims and French youth. More generally, her research illuminates how cultural processes of identity construction, primarily relating to gender and ethnicity, are achieved through everyday language use. Professor Tetreault’s publications and teaching both challenge naturalized assumptions about the link between identity and language, thereby contributing to new scholarship in linguistic anthropology that rejects the previously common pattern of equating cultural groups and particular language styles.
The larger theoretical and cultural issues of Dr. Tetreault’s work deal with globalization and the process of charting new social identities as they emerge in innovative linguistic forms. A main focus of this intellectual project concerns discovering and describing the processes whereby the ideological underpinnings of social identities are constructed and taken apart in everyday interaction. For example, Dr. Tetreault analyzes instances of “crossing,” that is, when individuals adopt and transform linguistic styles that are normally ascribed to a group to which they are not granted membership. Research on crossing holds a central theoretical place in current linguistic anthropological research because it provides a way to explore how linguistic and cultural forms come to take on particular social meanings as well as how they are challenged on ideological grounds.

The ambiguous legacy of the Irish Easter Rising: Patriotism or Terrorism?
Speaker: Paddy Woolworth
Paddy Woodworth is a public intellectual, an Irish Times journalist, author, and Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Languages and Literatures, University College Dublin.
The decision of a small minority of Irish nationalists to attempt a violent insurrection against British rule in 1916 reverberated across the colonial world, and has left a lasting but problematic legacy in contemporary Ireland a century later. Should Irish democrats this year celebrate a movement that used the gun to impose its will on the majority? Does a set of patriotic convictions legitimize the right to bear arms against the State, and one's fellow citizens? On the other hand, were the actions of the rebels ethically any worse than those of British and French national leaders who claimed democratic mandates for the contemporaneous slaughter of the First World War? But should the rebels not have waited to see if a victorious Britain would have honored her promise to grant Home Rule to the non-violent majority? The 1916 leaders undoubtedly espoused high political and social ideals but their actions led to the deaths of many civilians, including many children, in the short term, and inspired the actions of groups most citizens regard as terrorist in more recent history, such as the Provisional IRA. Paddy Woodworth will attempt to navigate these troubling arguments though he does not promise any definitive answers.

In this lecture, Adam Doskey, Visiting Curator of Rare Books and Manuscripts will present "Frederick Schwatka: Illinois's First Arctic Explorer."
In 1913, the University of Illinois co-sponsored a scientific expedition to Northern Greenland. Presented a century later, archival photographs and ethnographic artifacts document the intersection of the lives of the Polar Inuit and the American scientists. The Museum invites visitors to consider how aspects of this encounter fit into our current understanding of the study and representation of indigenous peoples.
North of the Northern Lights and its associated events are sponsored by the Dr. Allan C. Campbell Family Distinguished Speaker Series and co-sponsored by the European Union Center. The European Union Center is a Title VI National Resource Center and the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign that promotes and supports innovative research to better understand global issues confronting the world’s populations and identify ways to cope with and resolve these challenges.
The Director’s primary responsibilities are to supervise and coordinate a campus-wide, interdisciplinary program of research, teaching and public service created to examine the process and special policy problems of European integration and their implication for the United States. The director reports to the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Global Strategies and is advised by an all-campus advisory board comprised of faculty members from all UIUC colleges. This position will be an initial three-year term renewable each year upon successful evaluation and mutual agreement. The position includes an administrative stipend, ½ month summer salary, and partial teaching release for the length of the appointment. Start date is August 16, 2016 or sooner.

The European Diplomacy Workshop: Eastern Partnership is a week-long program devoted solely to the Eastern Partnership, European Neighborhood Policy and European Union Foreign Policy. Based on workshops from experts in the fields of EU Foreign Policy and hands-on skills training in International Negotiations, Leadership and Public Speaking, the European Diplomacy Workshop is designed for emerging political and social leaders, public servants and non-governmental representatives who are eager to learn how to influence the changing context of their country.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in European Politics and Policy
The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at Georgia Tech invites applications for a post-doctoral fellowship to begin Fall 2016 to be associated with the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies, a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence.
The term of appointment will be two years. The salary is highly competitive ($50 - 55k). The responsibilities include teaching one course per semester and supporting the activities of the Center. The ideal candidate would have research and teaching interests in European politics broadly defined. A focus on the politics of one or more member states; comparative European foreign policy; justice and home affairs (including counterterrorism and asylum/migration); or privacy and the digital economy would be particularly welcome. Applicants should show promise of outstanding scholarly achievement.
The Sam Nunn School is multidisciplinary and has growing undergraduate, graduate, and overseas programs, including joint undergraduate degrees with Modern Languages and Economics. The School’s programs focus on understanding the global context of advances in science and technology. The Sam Nunn School has 22 faculty members; more than 300 undergraduate majors, 50 Master’s and 10 Ph.D. degree students. Europe in Trouble - European Politics, Society, and Culture since 1945

This course focuses on important societal, political, and cultural issues that have shaped the history of Europe since 1945. It seeks to understand the many debates that have accompanied the process of European unification in their historical and cultural contexts.
The central thesis of the course is that the history of postwar Europe can be understood as a series of crises, starting with the immediate aftermath of World War II, but also including the revolutionary year 1968, the fall of the Wall, the war in Yugoslavia, etc. While the courses focuses on important societal and political developments, it also argues that culture played an important role in the series of crises that constitute Europe’s postwar history, and that films, essays, and other cultural artifacts can function as an important resource for understanding the conflicts and controversies that shaped the public debate in Europe since 1945.
Includes weekly film screenings.

Prague and Kraków, though less famed in the west than Paris, London, or Berlin, were unique and powerful hubs of European culture and history: the homes of the two oldest universities in Central Europe; the seats of ancient monarchies; cultural centers that were home to or attracted figures as diverse as Petrarch, Copernicus, Mozart, and Kafka. In the last century alone, they experienced an unprecedented set of upheavals as the multiethnic Habsburg Empire broke into new states, which were occupied and dismembered by the Nazis, and then subjugated by the Soviet Union. Today, both the Czech Republic and Poland are members of NATO as well as the European Union. The multiethnic character of these cities contributed both to their cultural dynamism and to periodic social tensions. Both cities were home to Slavs and Germans, and to thriving Jewish communities from the Middle Ages until the Holocaust. Both cities, renowned for the beauty of their setting and architecture, survived World War II physically almost unscathed, and are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The course focuses on the way that identity was defined and experienced by the peoples in shifting cultural registers and political systems, and on the way that the cities themselves embody this unstable history, through topics ranging from architecture and urban planning to memorials and historic preservation. Students will read historical documents and works of literature, but the cities and other historical spaces will themselves be the ultimate classroom.
Faculty Leader Bio
George Z. Gasyna, PhD (University of Toronto, Comparative Literature), having emigrated from Poland to Canada at an early age, retains fluency in the language and sensitivity to the culture of his first homeland. Currently Associate Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures and Comparative and World Literature at the University of Illinois, he is author of Polish, Hybrid, and Otherwise: Exilic Discourse in Joseph Conrad and Witold Gombrowicz (2011). He has published numerous articles, reviews and translations, and is presently at work on a book on 20th and 21st century Polish borderland literature.
