U of I Box storage quotas increase to 50 gigabytes
All Illinois students, faculty and staff have free access to secure cloud storage.
Starting January 14, 2013, the U of I Box service will provide 50 gigabytes of secure cloud storage to all Illinois students, faculty and staff at no cost.
This increased storage quota is nearly double the amount of space provided for free by six other major services (Dropbox, Google Drive, Amazon Cloud Storage, Apple iCloud, Cubby, and OpenDrive) -- combined.
For students, the new 50 GB quota is a tenfold increase from their previous U of I Box storage quota of 5GB. Faculty and staff saw their quotas increase from 15 GB to 50 GB.
If they have not done so already, students, faculty and staff can sign up for a U of I Box account. Existing U of I Box users will see their storage quotas increase to 50 GB automatically without having to take any action.
U of I Box first launched as a service to faculty and staff in the summer of 2012, and later expanded to students in September 2012.
As of January 15, 2013, 6,584 U of I Box accounts have been activated at the Urbana campus, with 9,202 accounts activated across the entire University of Illinois. The increased storage quotas translate to 462,090 GB of total space allocated to all of the existing accounts.
U of I Box works with hundreds of apps written for the Box service, including apps that will allow people to access their files from most mobile devices.
Initially, Illinois and seven other universities (Berkeley, Stanford, Cornell, Indiana, Notre Dame, Michigan and Carnegie Mellon) partnered together to bring Box to their campuses. The I2 partnership has since grown to 32 universities. This allows higher education to provide feature input to the storage service, such as security controls that make U of I Box secure enough to store FERPA-protected data.
