Dahmen elected member-at-large
Associate Professor of Physics Karin Dahmen has been elected a new member-at-large of the executive committee of the American Physical Society's Topical Group on Statistical and Nonlinear Physics (GSNP). Her three-year term will begin March 2010.
The objective of the GSNP is to advance and disseminate knowledge in the interdisciplinary area of nonequilibrium statistical physics. The group encourages research and applications in these areas and promotes international cooperation.
Professor Dahmen received her Vordiplom in physics from the Universität Bonn, Germany, in 1989, and her Ph.D in physics from Cornell in 1995. Before joining the faculty at Illinois in 1999, she was a Junior Fellow at Harvard University.
Dahmen has wide-ranging interests in "soft" condensed matter physics, including nonequilibrium dynamical systems, hysteresis, avalanches, earthquakes, population biology, and disorder-induced critical behavior.
