Aggravated Assault (with weapon)
INCIDENT: Aggravated Assault (with weapon)
OCCURRED: October 22, 2010, 11:55 p.m.
LOCATION: 600 Block of E. Daniel Street, Champaign
The Champaign Police Department has received a report of an aggravated assault involving a weapon that occurred in the 600 Block of E. Daniel Street (map).
On October 23, 2010 at approximately 10:30 a.m., the University of Illinois Police Department was contacted by an individual who was the victim of this incident within the City of Champaign. The Champaign Police Department is completing an incident report and investigation surrounding this incident.
The victim advised that on October 22, 2010 at approximately 11:55 p.m. he was walking on the south sidewalk of Daniel Street from the area of Wright Street. When the victim was between Wright Street and Sixth Street, he was briefly confronted by a group of individuals who approached from the north. One of the offenders called out to the victim and pointed a handgun at the victim’s face while making unintelligible remarks. The victim briskly walked away as the offenders continued to make unknown remarks.
The offenders were described as five white males and two white females between the approximate ages of 18 to 19 years old. The offender who pointed the handgun at the victim is described as being tall and semi-muscular with a rectangular face and fat cheeks. (SEE INFORMATION BELOW REGARDING VIDEO OF OFFENDERS)
The Champaign Police Department is actively working to identify and apprehend the offenders in this incident in conjunction with the University of Illinois Police. University of Illinois Police have reviewed campus security cameras in the area and posted video of the offenders (bottom of page).
Police are asking campus community members to review these videos for assistance. Individuals who may have information regarding these offenders, witnesses to this event or those in the surrounding area at the time with information are encouraged to contact the Champaign Police Department. University of Illinois Detectives will continue to review additional video from the campus security camera network. Members of the campus community are strongly encouraged to follow these safety tips to decrease their potential for becoming a victim:
- Stay alert - call the police immediately to report suspicious activity.
- Trust your instincts - if it does not feel right, call for help.
- Avoid walking alone at night. Travel in groups when possible and always walk in well-lit, heavily traveled areas.
- Turn down your electronic devices. Excessive volume or use of electronic devices (iPods, PDAs, cell phones, etc.) can distract you from a potential safety hazard.
- Drink responsibly - remember your ability to respond is diminished by over-consumption of alcohol.

This video was captured at the corner of Sixth Street and Daniel Street immediately following the incident. The group of offenders are shown crossing the street walking north (from the right side of the frame to the left side frame). The first female seen crossing the street appearing to be texting is wearing an orange or red vest and boots. The other female appears to be wearing a blue jacket draped over her shoulders. These females were observed dancing on Daniel Street as the group approached the victim. The male who eventually reaches out for the female in the vest is wearing a green hoodie sweatshirt with writing on the back and a red baseball cap.
