Editor and Publisher coverJustin Breen '99 JOURN, a Times Media Co. editor, has received an award from Editor & Publisher for being one of the nation's brightest journalism leaders under the age of 35.

The magazine named Breen, assistant managing editor of content for The Times of Northwest Indiana, as a winner of the 25 Under 35 award.

Breen, 33, has been employed at The Times since March 2006. Prior to his promotion to become assistant managing editor in June, he was sports editor.

Breen, who graduated with a degree in news-editorial journalism, generates ideas and coordinates content for the newspaper's daily front cover, works with a team of editors to determine daily content placements on, and coordinates activities within the photo department. Breen also is the Journalism Coordinator for the College of Media Alumni Board.

In October, Breen served as the lead editor for the Recession to Recovery project. The project involved 10 Indiana newspapers to generate written and visual content to show the impact of the global economic recession on business sectors in the state.

Times Publisher Bill Masterson, Jr. and Executive Editor William Nangle nominated Breen for the award.

"Breen is an example of a journalist holding to the highest tenets of his honored profession while unafraid to embrace the bold opportunities of a changing industry," Masterson said.

"Justin has the energy and ideas fueling our delivery of information over multiple platforms," Nangle said. "He embraces the developing digital world while holding fast to the tenets of good journalism."

Breen said he appreciated the award and the opportunity to transition from leading the sports department to working with more people at the media company.

"It's a great challenge," Breen said. "But I really enjoy the news part of the business and working with so many energetic and focused people."
