No other advertising program in the nation dare attempt what the American Advertising Federation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) did on Thursday March 8, 2012.

The American Advertising Federation at Illinois organized an event for over one hundred students to visit eighteen advertising agencies in Chicago, I was fortunate to be one of those lucky students.

We boarded two buses at 6:00 a.m. to depart at 6:30 a.m. for the Wrigley Building in Chicago.  Upon arrival we separated into six groups of about eighteen students.  Group 5 was shuffled together in the windy city, as I quickly joined them to rush off to DraftFCB, the first of the three advertising agencies that our group would visit.  We then went on to visit the multicultural agency – The San Jose Group, and then ended our agency tours with Energy BBDO.

The format of the agency presentations and tours varied with the culture and specializations of the agencies.  DraftFCB gave a formal presentation, with an introduction, a presentation by Media Director Bob Bernstein and a Q & A session with entry level DraftFCB employees.  The San Jose Group gave a conference style presentation, and gave a full agency tour.  Energy BBDO was a relaxed and informal meeting and Q&A session with entry level employees including some Illinois alumni.

The day concluded with an Alumni Interface at Schafer Condon Carter. Within an hour we ran out of alumni name badges; but it is estimated that over 50 alumni were present for the networking event.  The Alumni Interface is a yearly event that the Advertising Department at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign sponsors, and this year’s was by far the best yet.
