Figure One Exhibition Opening Reception
Friday, February 21, 2014
5:00 pm-8:00 pm
Figure One, 116 N. Walnut Street, Champaign, IL

Utilizing the principles of relational aesthetics, which seeks to consider human relations and their social context as a point of departure, Social Habitat: The Porch Project by Heather Hart will transform Figure One’s main gallery space into an experiential and experimental environment that invites passersby, students, community members and more to engage with each other, the space itself and various activities unfolding within it. The exhibition will open on February 21, 2014 and close April 5, 2014. Lower Manhattan Cultural Council Artist-in-Residence, Heather Hart, will convert Figure One’s main galleries into a space that mimics the spatial dynamics of a residential porch. Its purpose is to serve as a community springboard for interdisciplinary learning and engagement, while also encouraging reflection about physical, spatial and psychological identity. Hart has previously built residentially inspired constructions, for the Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Studio Museum in Harlem and the Seattle Museum of Art, among other notable institutions.

Sponsorship for Exhibitions and Programming at Figure One is generously provided by: The Illinois School of Art + Design, the Illinois School of Architecture, the Illinois School of Architecture’s Solar Decathlon Team, the Illinois School of Art + Design Visitors Committee and the Jerold Ziff Fund.
