U of I Center for Translation Studies prepares students to bridge cultural and linguistic divides through translation and interpreting

2/7/2017  8:00 am

The Center for Translation Studies offers undergraduate and graduate Certificates and a Master’s degree in Translation and Interpreting.

The first CTS MA cohort graduated in 2015, and many alumni have fully entered the professional world. One is a professional subtitler for a major online TV company, another is a medical interpreter in California, and several others are project managers for translation companies.

CTS Certificate graduates are also putting their knowledge to use professionally, whether through published literary translations, translation and interpreting project management, or the coordination of international relations in a major corporation.

The Certificate is open to all U of I undergraduate and graduate students who have at least intermediate competence in a language other than English and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. CTS accepts applications for the Certificate program on a rolling basis.

The MA program, which can be completed online or on campus, offers coursework in translation theory, translation for the professions, literary translation, and interpreting. Applicants are encouraged to apply by March 15 for full consideration, including scholarship opportunities. Applications turned in after this date will be considered as space allows.
