Jessica Nicholas receives Graduate College Dissertation Completion fellowship

Jessica Nicholas, a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in French Linguistics, has been awarded a U. of I. Graduate College Dissertation Completion Fellowship.

Jessica’s concentration is in Romance Linguistics, with a particular interest in nasal vowels. She is a former high school Spanish teacher from the Seattle area. Her dissertation is titled: "Social and learner-specific factors in the acquisition of local dialectal features by study abroad students in French."

The members of her committee are Zsuzsanna Fagyal (chair, co-director), French & Italian; Aurore Mroz (co-director), French & Italian; Anna Maria Escobar, Spanish & Portuguese; Michele Koven, Communication; and Joseph Roy, Linguistic Data Analytics Manager, SLCL.

The Graduate College's Dissertation Completion Fellowships help outstanding students complete the doctoral degree by providing a one-year stipend. The intent is to free Fellows from assistantships and other work obligations, allowing them to devote themselves full-time to the completion of the dissertation.
