Dr. Eman Saadah, Director of the Less Commonly Taught Languages Program, will be the faculty leader for a fall/winter study abroad seminar course titled “Jordan: Immigration and Integration.”

Provided there are at least 12 participants for the seminar to take place, on-campus classes for the seminar (Global Studies 298) will be held in the Foreign Languages Building during the final eight weeks of fall semester, followed by a group flight to Jordan, organized by the Office of Illinois Abroad. Students will be in Jordan between Dec. 30 and Jan. 13. All group flights will be departing from and arriving at Chicago’s O'Hare Airport.

While in Jordan, students will stay in hotels. They will attend seminars on immigration/refugees, visit United Nations-run facilities and refugee camps, and visit tourist sites, among other activities in the cities of Amman, Irbid and Aqaba.

The seminar is designed to give students a strong understanding of global issues of immigration and integration through the case study of a particular region.

Dr. Saadah, who also is director and language coordinator of Arabic and advisor for the minor in Arabic Studies, as well as a senior lecturer of Arabic, says that the seminar will investigate the social and political landscape of the Middle East, focusing on Jordan. She adds that the program draws from interdisciplinary materials and would be of particular interest to those pursuing majors in political science, anthropology, history, architecture and archeology, religious studies, etc.

The seminar is sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Illinois Abroad.

The application deadline for the seminar is Thursday, Sept. 15. Scholarships are available.
