Jennifer Marsh graduated from U of I in 1985 with a BA in Spanish and Geography. Immediately upon graduating she became an officer in the U.S. Army, as she had participated in U of I’s Army ROTC program.

“Although I had a major in Spanish I took a course in German during my last semester at U of I, as I knew I would be stationed in Germany while in the Army,” she said. “That course served me well. One of my fondest memories of my time in the Army was one day when my Military Police unit was working with a unit from Puerto Rico and with the German Polizei. Throughout the day I was able to provide three-way translation among those speaking English, Spanish, and German!”

Jennifer commented that the Spanish program at U of I provided her with a strong foundation. “It allowed me to later earn an MA in Spanish Translation from the City University of New York Graduate Center and to obtain work in both translation and teaching. I currently work as an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Kentucky, where I have taught for 15 years.”
