NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants awarded to Linguistics graduate students Marissa Barlaz and Eun Hee Kim

Linguistics graduate students Marissa Barlaz and Eun Hee Kim are recipients of Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants from the National Science Foundation.

The National Science Foundation's Division of Social and Economic Sciences and Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university.

Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question.

Barlaz received a B.A. in Linguistics and a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Pittsburgh in 2011 and an M.A. in Linguistics from the U of I in 2014. Her dissertation project is titled “Articulatory and Acoustic Differences in Phonemic Nasal, Phonetically Nasalized, and Oral Vowels in Brazilian Portuguese.”

Barlaz previously received a Dissertation Completion Fellowship from the U of I’s Graduate College for 2016-17. Her Principal Investigator (PI) is Ryan Shosted, Associate Professor of Linguistics, and her co-PI is Brad Sutton, Associate Professor of Bioengineering.

Kim received B.A. and M.Ed. degrees in English Language Education from Korea University and an M.A. in Linguistics from the U of I. Her research interests include Experimental Syntax and Second Language Acquisition/Processing. Her Principal Investigator (PI) is Tania Ionin, Associate Professor of Linguistics, and her co-PI’s are James Yoon, Professor of Linguistics, and Kiel Christianson, Professor of Educational Psychology.
