Romelia Solano, an undergraduate political science and Latino/Latina Studies major, has been selected to participate in the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute. This institute, created by the American Political Science Association in 1986, is named in honor of the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize winner and former American Political Science Association President, Dr. Ralph J. Bunche. The Institute, hosted by Duke University, is a fully-paid, five-week, academically intensive summer program designed to simulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring and training in research methods, and expand academic opportunities in the field of political science. Romelia’s research interests have been in the areas of Latino political participation, Latino political identity development, and political representation for historically underrepresented groups at the congressional level. Romelia has also recently earned the Rita and Leonard Ogren Award for Academic Excellence from the Department of Political Science at the University of Illinois.
