What are the biggest challenges/rewards of your practice? The biggest challenge for me is the management of personnel. The biggest rewards occur when a critical patient gets better and can rejoin its family. I also like the appreciation my clients show for the things I do.
What are some of your favorite memories from your time as a DVM student at Illinois?
I loved the people in my class, the jokes we played on our professors, ‘horse’ races in the BSB, pizza parties in the wee hours studying anatomy, and the swine trip to Beardstown. I had some really caring professors.
What lessons did you take away from your DVM education and how have they applied to your practice?
I worked hard to learn the material and I still enjoy continuing education and the pearls I learn from talking to other practitioners. It’s amazing what you can learn just shooting the breeze with other vets at meetings. Then you can apply them in your practice.
Were you involved in any student clubs or organizations?
I was involved in ISCAVMA and OTS. I lived in the OTS house for 2 years.
Are you currently involved with the University of Illinois?
I have interviewed prospective students for the past 3 years. I have served for the past 5 years on the ISVMA Board that meets every fall with the students. I refer patients to the teaching hospital and use the diagnostic lab for histopathology.
