Study Abroad First Steps Meeting for DGS Students

What? First Steps meeting for students in DGS
Topics to be covered include:
* what study abroad programs are available
* what to consider when choosing a program
* the application process
* how to pay for studying abroad (program cost, scholarships and financial aid, etc)
Attendance at a First Steps meeting is required before making an individual advising appointment and/or submitting an application for a Study Abroad Office program. First Steps meetings are regularly held Monday through Friday at 4 p.m. in Room 132 Davenport Hall. For the first time ever, though, the Study Abroad Office is offering you this opportunity to attend a First Steps meeting tailored to DGS students! Please join us!

PROVOST STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD
The Office of the Provost seeks applications for students to serve on a Student Advisory Board that would meet bi-weekly on Wednesdays, 5:00 - 6:30 pm. The board will serve to not only inform students about what is going on at the Office of the Provost, but also to get feedback from students about current strategic initiatives that the University is undertaking. The purpose of the Provost Student Advisory Board is to advise the Office of the Provost on major initiatives that impact the academic student experience on issues such as enrollment, research and creative activity, diversity, international experiences, advising, and others.
Members are expected to serve for the entire 2009-10 school year and attend meetings twice a month. Current freshmen through juniors from all majors are encouraged to apply. Applications can be found at http://provost.illinois.edu/about/psab.html. Applications must be received by Monday, April 6, 2009. Applications may be submitted in person to the Office of the Provost, 217 Swanlund Administration Building or emailed to provost@illinois.edu.
PROVOST STUDENT INTERNS
The Office of the Provost seeks applications for four or five student interns to serve during the 2009-10 academic year. Student interns will work closely with members of the Provost Office staff team on special projects and committees in areas related to strategic plan implementation, undergraduate education, diversity initiatives, enrollment management, and research initiatives. In these areas, student interns may be asked to assist with a range of activities, such as organizing and participating in meetings, convening focus groups, evaluating programs, designing web-based communication tools, providing recommendations, and summarizing findings in presentations or written format. Student interns are paid positions ($12 per hour), with approximately 10 hours per week of expected involvement in Provost office activities.
Current sophomores or juniors with an interest in academic affairs initiatives with campus activities are encouraged to apply. 2009 Undergradute Research Symposium
The second annual campus-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Illini Union. Over one hundred students will share the fruits of their faculty-mentored research, scholarly, and creative activity. National Volunteer Week Service Awards nomination
The Office of Volunteer Programs is once more sponsoring National Volunteer Week!
Each year OVP works to unite the campus community with local service organizations throughout Champaign-Urbana by promoting volunteer projects during National Volunteer Week. National Volunteer Week is also a time to honor and recognize the hundreds of individuals who put forth their time and effort to help others through service.
Attached is the National Volunteer Week Service Awards nomination form providing specific detailed information pertaining to how individuals and/or groups can nominate themselves or others for this award. Could you please pass along this information to staff members and students?

New Modern Greek classes

This course will examine the role of extinction in shaping the history of life on Earth. We will explore the "big five" extinction events - including the two mass extinctions that mark the rise and fall of the dinosaurs - and other periods of rapid ecological change. We will examine the causes of these mass extinctions of the past, and study how animal and plant life recovered from them. A major theme will be the ongoing modern extinction crisis, and the lessons we can learn from the past when addressing modern biodiversity loss, from the loss of the dodo bird in the 17th century to the threat of extinction faced by polar bears and other plants and animals today.

A second college application?! Students in the Division of General Studies are often overwhelmed with not only the second application, but with all of the requirements and skills necessary for an intercollegiate transfer.
DGSociety is here to help by sponsoring the Apply Yourself Workshop on April 8 at 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
What the Workshop Includes:
The Apply Yourself theme this year hinges on four proactive verbs: designing, constructing, building, and hammering. All attendees will kick off the evening with an introductory presentation, Designing Your Blueprint: Application Preparation.
Following the group meeting at the beginning, there will be three workshops which everyone will attend: Constructing an Essay, Building a Resume, and Hammering It All Out.
Participants will engage in in-depth tutorials on essay writing, resume building, what admissions officers are looking for in an application package, and tips for formulating a plan while here at the University of Illinois. Trust us; it will be well worth your time!!

Library Gaming Career Night
April 2nd, 2009 - *Gaming Career Night*. 7-10pm in Room 295 of the Undergrad Library.
Industry insiders at local gaming company Volition will offer students tips on breaking into the competitive gaming industry, including how to make a resume and a portfolio that will impress gaming companies.
Academic advisers will be on hand to point out classes that will give students the skills and the experience crucial to gaming careers, and handouts covering job hunting tips and campus career resources will be available for students. Campus advising and career services will provide information on improving job searching skills so that candidates can find that perfect job. Student gaming groups and industry experts will provide ample opportunities for networking with other professionals in a friendly, low-pressure atmosphere.

Summer Course at Yellowstone
SUMMER YELLOWSTONE PARK VISIT and CLASS. PS 199, "The Politics of Wildlife and Wilderness in Yellowstone" is offered this summer. This course uses a week-long trip to the region around Yellowstone National Park to explore political questions associated with natural resources and the environment questions about the value of the wilderness, wildlife, natural preservation and public recreation.
