Special Lecture on The Aesthetics of Race in Middle Class America

James D. Anderson, Gutgsell Professor of Educational Policy Studies, Illinois
From Looney Coons to Tacos & Tequila: The Aesthetics of Race in Middle Class America

Jim Anderson explores the ways in which evolving forms of race and ethnic performance entered into and shaped the culture of middle class America from the late nineteenth century to the present. He begins with an analysis of the art and lyrics of minstrel sheet music in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and then traces its legacy through television, “playful” racialized antics in educated environments and into the theme parties of contemporary campus life.  Then and now, race performances have supplied America’s middle class with fun and entertainment while offering up ethnic and race caricatures that have reinforced entrenched dynamics of race superiority, national identity and citizenship status.

New Major-Interdisciplinary Health (i-Health) Degree

The College of Applied Health Sciences is pleased to announce a new degree program, Interdisciplinary Health or i-Health. Students who complete this program will receive a bachelor of science in Health. The i-Health program is interdisciplinary in nature, so students will take courses from a variety of disciplines and will learn, through an extensive practicum, how to synthesize cross-disciplinary information in order to effectively deal with issues related to health and health behavior.  Additionally, students will have an opportunity to concentrate in Health and Aging, Health Behavior Change and Health Diversity.
Interdisciplinary training is critical in today’s society as you will see that many researchers and policy makers are enlisting interdisciplinary teams in an effort to more holistically deal with health-related issues. We will be accepting applications for ICTs for the fall 2009 semester so please encourage interested students to attend one of the sessions listed on our website at http://ihealth.illinois.edu.  Additional information about degree requirements are listed here as well (under the ABOUT tab).  We will begin accepting freshmen into the i-Health program in the fall of 2010.

If you have more detailed questions about i-Health, please contact Sheri Shaw, Program Coordinator, at snshaw@illinois.edu; Amy O’Neill, Academic Advisor, at aoneill@illinois.edu; Cassie Meinert, Academic Advisor, at cmeinert@illinois.edu; or Bill Stewart, Director of i-Health, at wstewart@illinois.edu.
