2010 Commencement - a special day

Published Date:May 17, 2010

Colleagues:

Commencement is a favorite day for many of us who work at a university. It was extra special for me because it was my tenth and last one; I tried to savor every moment.

I am writing to let you know how grateful I am to the campus community for its great work in making commencement a special day for our graduates. I know that the planning goes on year-round and that is evident when the event runs so well.

So to the Commencement Planning Committee, the UIS staff, the many who volunteered Saturday, to the faculty for the great turnout, to the registrar’s office for all you did, and to the electronic media and web staff, I am very grateful.

It was a great celebration with so much positive energy in and around the convention center. There are many opportunities to relive the day on our web site.  Just go to the UIS home page and click on the many links to pictures, video, and speeches.

Enjoy the summer!   And savor another great year.

TODAY: Open Forum regarding Chancellor Search

Author: Tih-Fen Ting

Published Date:May 17, 2010

Dear Colleagues,

The campus members of the UIS Chancellor Search Advisory Committee will be holding an open forum from 10:30 am to noon, today (May 17) at UHB 2034.  We think it’s important to have such a forum before campus members disperse for the summer.  The purpose of the open forum is to provide an opportunity for feedback from the campus community regarding the opportunities and challenges facing UIS as well as desirable experiences, professional characteristics, and personal qualities required of candidates.

If you are not able to attend the open forum, please feel free to send me your thoughts and comments at tting1@uis.edu.

Thank you very much for your attention.  See you at the forum.

Tih-Fen Ting
Chair, Chancellor Search Advisory Committee

I am pleased to announce the appointment of David Racine as Interim Executive Director of the Center for State Policy and Leadership (CSPL), pending Board of Trustees approval at its May meeting.  David succeeds Tony Halter who is retiring as of June 15, 2010.

Dr. Racine came to UIS in Fall 2007 to lead the Institute for Legal, Legislative and Policy Studies (ILLAPS).  Under his leadership, grant funding for ILLAPS activities has increased  from $2.4 million to $4.1 million, a 70% increase.  Prior to his appointment at UIS, he served in a variety of consulting and project management roles, including staff appointments with Governor Tom Kean (New Jersey) and Senator John Danforth (Missouri).  He is an expert in the area of program replication and has numerous publications addressing that subject as well as the topics of program evaluation, voluntary organizations, and intergenerational communities.

Colleagues:

I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who attended this morning's campus gathering to welcome the new University of Illinois President Michael J. Hogan.  I believe Dr. Hogan was very impressed at the great turnout here to greet him.  If you weren't able to attend the actual event, you can catch it online at http://webcast2.uis.edu/multimedia/Archive/2010/100513presidentann.html

I enjoyed meeting and visiting with Dr. Hogan and look forward to working with him when he begins his duties on July 1.

The completion of an academic year is a busy time for everyone at UIS, but also a time to reflect on our accomplishments.  I want you to know how much I appreciate the work you do everyday to make UIS the great place that it is.  Thanks again.
