Albert Liao receives SRC NRI Hans J. Coufal Fellowship

ECE graduate student Albert Liao (BS PHYS 07, MS ECE 08) was recently awarded the Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) Nanoelectronics Research Initiative (NRI) Hans J. Coufal Fellowship to continue his current research at Illinois. Liao, working under ECE Assistant Professor Eric Pop, is only the second recipient of the Coufal Fellowship, which is presented to a graduate student working under an NRI sponsored faculty member. The Fellowship was created to honor the memory of Dr. Hans Coufal who founded the NRI and was first awarded in 2007. Included in the award are expenses for Liaos tuition and fees, a cash stipend, and a $2,000 annual award given to the department.

ECE graduate students tie for Best Paper Award

Something exciting and unusual happened at the 2009 IEEE International Conference on Nanotechnology. There was a tie for the Best Paper Award. Even more distinctive was the fact that the winners, Justin Koepke and Joshua Wood, are both graduate students in ECE Professor Joe Lyding's research group.

Han Wui Then works to create faster, cheaper network technology

ECE graduate student Han Wui Then holds a laser and casing in his hand, lightly juggling it up and down to get a sense of its proportions, like a pitcher getting a feel for a new baseball. He puts the laser down on a table in front of him and pulls out a tiny plastic case about the size of a quarter. Then opens the case and carefully removes a chip which he places on the table next to the laser. The fact that the tiny wafer, a mere fraction of the larger laser, contains 320 transistor lasers is amazing. But not as amazing as what Then says next.

ECE Professor and MNTL Director Rashid Bashir was part of a team of scientists from Illinois, Purdue University, and the Indian Institute of Technology that has developed a faster and more sensitive biosensor for detecting the deadliest strain of Listeria food-poisoning bacteria.

Biosensor technology being used for research across campus

During the past three years, ECE Associate Professor and MNTL Resident Faculty member Brian Cunningham and his graduate students have been developing ways to use photonic crystals in biosensing. Their research projects involve collaboration with several departments within the University.
