The Institute of Communications Research announces the launch of two scholars. Kevin Healey and Camille Johnson Yale successfully defended their dissertations in the past week.  Dr. Healey's dissertation entitled "The Spirit of Networks: New Media and the Changing Role of Religion in American Public Life" was advised by Dr. Clifford Christians. Dr. Johnson-Yale"s dissertation "Runaway Film Production: A Critical History of Hollywood's Outsourcing Discourse" was advised by Dr. John Nerone. ICR congratulates these two outstanding scholars whose contributions to the field are sure to enrich our discipline.

Thanks to Oprah, students in Victor Pickard's ('08 PhD COMM) media studies class at New York University got a surprise. The Daily Show's Jon Stewart stopped by to give an impromptu lecture and free books. While some students were visibly surprised, several asked questions of Stewart about his use of news in his show. Claudio Moreira '07 PhD COMM, assistant professor of communication at University of Massachusetts and co-author with Marcelo Diversi, of "Betweener Talk: Decolonizing Knowledge Production, Pedagogy, and Praxis," has been awarded the National Communication Association's 2010 Ethnography Division Book Award.

Boatema Boateng '02 PhD COMM has been promoted to Associate Professor in the Department of Communications at the University of California at San Diego.

Carrie A. Rentschler '02 PhD COMM has been named the William Dawson Scholar of Feminist Media Studies in the Art History and Communication Studies Department at McGill University, in Montreal.
