Ecology of Place and Sustainable Urban Areas
This talk will present an approach to improve local decision making that can help facilitate the creation and maintenance of more livable, vibrant, healthy and sustainable urban places. Traditional planning and design solutions have been the products of parochial regionality, based in large part on available materials, energy sources, climatic conditions and navigable transportation routes. But the ecology of place is rapidly being replaced by more intensive and sometimes technologically based solutions, systematically removing our connections to natural systems and implicating our decision-making processes.

From Blindness to Sight: The Physics of Vision Restoration
Nature and Nature's laws lay hid in night; God said, Let Newton be! and all was light (Alexandre Pope)In this lecture, we will examine the main causes of blindness. We will show how a fundamental understanding of the laws of Physics (before and after Newton) and tools developed based on these fundamental laws have played a central role in the accurate diagnostic and eventual elimination of many forms of blindness. We will then focus on the remaining challenges and how they are being addressed. Some of the topics we will discuss include near sightedness and why glasses actually work, LASIK, cataract, macular degeneration, and retinal detachment, as well as artificial vision. Come see for yourself!
