Center for Children's Books Annual Book Sale

The Center for Children's Books at GSLIS is hosting its eleventh annual books sale Monday, February 20, through Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Sale hours are 10:00am to 6:00pm each of these days. Thousands of new children's books will be available for youth ages birth through high school. The titles available represent the full spectrum of children's publishing in fiction and nonfiction: board books, picture books, easy and transitional readers, chapter books, series fiction, novels, activity books and kits, nonfiction series, mass-market paperbacks, and more. Paperback books are $1 or $2 each, hardcover books are $5 each, and individual items are priced as marked. All proceeds support the Center for Children's Books and The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books. Annual Faculty Retreat: Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching and Enhanced Learning

The theme of this year's retreat is "Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching and Enhanced Learning." The principles are based on research evidence from the science of learning and the science of instruction and can help us to determine what works and how it works. We are pleased to have Dr. Susan Ambrose, Associate Provost for Education, Director of the Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence, and Teaching Professor in the Department of History at Carnegie Mellon as the plenary speaker. She has conducted national and international seminars and workshops for faculty and administrators. She has received funding from the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, and the Lilly Endowment. Ambrose is co-author of How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching (2010). There will be many opportunities for participants to engage in discussions and to expand upon the plenary talk. The retreat will offer interactive concurrent sessions, poster sessions, and lunch conversations. Professor and Head of Entomology May Berenbaum will be our lunch hour speaker.
