The Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) Executive Committee held its fall meeting on October 28, 2009, in Springfield, Illinois, and seven new research ideas were approved. To date, ICT has a total of 116 projects. Out of those projects, 51 have been completed. The newly approved research totals almost $1.1 million. At least five of the newly approved research projects, with an estimated cost of $785,000, will be outsourced to other universities or private researchers.
ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi and his student, Mr. Jongeun Baek, visited Korea on September 24-27, 2009. They gave a series of lectures and had the pleasure of visiting the ready-to-open Incheon Bridge, which is currently the sixth longest bridge (around 7.6 miles) in the world.

ICT recently held its first virtual technical review panel meeting to connect participants from Illinois and Santiago, Chile. Participants shared streaming audio and video, files, multimedia presentations, and marker boards in real-time, therefore making distance no detriment to project collaboration.
ICT congratulates its investigators, staff, and students on several recent awards.
ICT maximizes the impact of its research through outreach activities that include special events, conferences, and publishing.

Shih-Hsien is the subject of this quarter's Alumni Spotlight, where we report on where life has taken former UIUC/ICT researchers.
The C.C. Wiley Traveling Award winner receives funding to hit the road for 2-3 weeks and see the nation's transportation and construction industries firsthand. Brian Hill, this year's award winner, spent the first two weeks of August traveling an ambitious itinerary from Champaign to the east coast and back.
UIUC and ICT investigators look foward to presenting an impressive number of topics at the upcoming 89th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) on January 10-14, 2010, in Washington, D.C.
A good friend, ILLINI, and supporter of research at the Illinois Center for Transportation, Eric Harm, has announced he will retire from IDOT at the end of this year. Eric is the Deputy Director, Assistant to the Chief Engineer of Highways.
Mark your calendar for the 50th Annual Illinois Bituminous Paving Conference to be held December 9, 2009, in Champaign, IL. This annual conference is a compact one-day program that provides an opportunity for highway engineers to meet with contractors, government officials, consultants, and fellow engineers to share the latest technical information and review actual field reports in the area of hot-mix asphalt construction. Registration is now open. Contact Leslie Elble at lelble@illinois.edu for information on sponsorships for this conference.
The 2010 Transportation and Safetey Engineering (THE) conference will be held February 23-24 at the historic Illini Union Building on the UIUC campus. This conference draws over 950 participants each year. Look for a redesigned website and registration to open soon.
