ICT Executive Committee Approves Seven New Research Ideas

The Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) Executive Committee held its fall meeting on October 28, 2009, in Springfield, Illinois, and seven new research ideas were approved. To date, ICT has a total of 116 projects. Out of those projects, 51 have been completed. The newly approved research totals almost $1.1 million. At least five of the newly approved research projects, with an estimated cost of $785,000, will be outsourced to other universities or private researchers.

ICT Director and Student Visit Incheon Bridge, Give Lectures in Korea

ICT Director Imad Al-Qadi and his student, Mr. Jongeun Baek, visited Korea on September 24-27, 2009. They gave a series of lectures and had the pleasure of visiting the ready-to-open Incheon Bridge, which is currently the sixth longest bridge (around 7.6 miles) in the world.

IDOT Updates Pavement Design Procedures

IDOT, in conjunction with UIUC researchers, is working towards implementing revised design procedures for use in Illinois. Implementation is expected to occur early in 2010.

Registration Open for IDOT Documentation Training

ICT recently opened registration for the 2009-2010 Documentation of Contract Quantities Class. All consultants who perform construction inspection (Phase III) work for IDOT must take and pass this class, which assures well-trained, prequalified consultants to perform construction inspection in Illinois.

ICT Implements Virtual Meetings

ICT recently held its first virtual technical review panel meeting to connect participants from Illinois and Santiago, Chile. Participants shared streaming audio and video, files, multimedia presentations, and marker boards in real-time, therefore making distance no detriment to project collaboration.

Illinois Pavement Society (IPS) Hosts Workshop on MATLAB

The Illinois Pavement Society, formed to promote interaction and knowledge exchange about pavement systems among students, researchers, and practitioners, recently presented a workshop on the computational tool MATLAB.

ICT Alumni Spotlight: Shih-Hsien Yang. PhD 2009

Shih-Hsien Yang witnessed several changes at ATREL during the past 5 years, including the inception of ICT. Now, he works and conducts research for Nichols Consulting Engineers in San Francisco. Shih-Hsien is the subject of this quarter's Alumni Spotlight, where we report on where life has taken former UIUC/ICT researchers.

Wiley Award Allows for Unique Travel and Learning Experience

The C.C. Wiley Traveling Award winner receives funding to hit the road for 2-3 weeks and see the nation's transportation and construction industries firsthand. Brian Hill, this year's award winner, spent the first two weeks of August traveling an ambitious itinerary from Champaign to the east coast and back.

Eric Harm to Retire from IDOT

A good friend, ILLINI, and supporter of research at the Illinois Center for Transportation, Eric Harm, has announced he will retire from IDOT at the end of this year. Eric is the Deputy Director, Assistant to the Chief Engineer of Highways.

Illinois Bituminous Paving Conference Celebrates 50 Years on December 9

Mark your calendar for the 50th Annual Illinois Bituminous Paving Conference to be held December 9, 2009, in Champaign, IL. This annual conference is a compact one-day program that provides an opportunity for highway engineers to meet with contractors, government officials, consultants, and fellow engineers to share the latest technical information and review actual field reports in the area of hot-mix asphalt construction. T.H.E. Conference Set for February 23-24, 2010

The 2010 Transportation and Safetey Engineering (THE) conference will be held February 23-24 at the historic Illini Union Building on the UIUC campus. This conference draws over 950 participants each year. Look for a redesigned website and registration to open soon.
