IPRH Prizes for Research in the Humanities 2012-13

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities is pleased to announce the winners of its 2012–13 Prizes for Research in the Humanities. The awards will be presented to the following winners at a ceremony on Wednesday, May 1. The Prizes honor excellence in humanities research by faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students.

IPRH Announces Themeless Year for 2014-15 Fellowships

IPRH Faculty and Graduate Student Fellowships, 2014–15

IPRH is pleased to announce that the 2014–15 IPRH Fellowship year will be a themeless one. IPRH occasionally suspends its fellowship theme, as was the case for the 2010–11 academic year. IPRH welcomes applications from scholars in all disciplines and departments with an interest in humanities and humanities-inflected research. The projects proposed to IPRH for 2014–15 Fellowships may investigate any subject, and the proposals will be evaluated on their scholarly excellence. IPRH is especially interested in fostering interdisciplinary work.

All Fellows are expected to maintain residence on the U of I campus during the award year, and to participate in IPRH activities, including the yearlong Fellows Seminar.

Complete fellowship application guidelines for 2014–15 will be posted on the IPRH website in summer 2013 (For Faculty; For Graduate Students). Applications must be submitted through an online portal, which will open September 1^st. No paper or emailed applications or letters of recommendation will be accepted.

All application materials, including letters of reference, must be submitted by midnight, Friday, December 6, 2013.

ILLINOIS PROGRAM FOR RESEARCH IN THE HUMANITIES

FELLOWS 2013–14 — “THE BODY / BODIES”

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has awarded its annual Faculty and Graduate Student Fellowships to seven faculty members and seven graduate students from the Illinois campus for the academic year 2013–14.

Faculty Fellows are released from one semester of teaching, with the approval of their departments and college, and receive a research allocation. Graduate Student Fellows receive a stipend from the IPRH. All IPRH Fellows are expected to remain in residence on the Illinois campus during the award year, and to participate in the Program’s yearlong interdisciplinary Fellows Seminar.

* Through the generous support of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) and the Nicholson Endowment Fund, two of the graduate fellowship recipients have been designated as IPRH-Nicholson Fellows. The Nicholson Endowment is a gift of Grace W. Nicholson (1906–1998), who pursued undergraduate studies in LAS, and Professor Emeritus John A. Nicholson (1891–1986), a faculty member in the Philosophy Department at Illinois for 33 years. The Nicholson Endowment, which was established in 1999, provides support for the academic programs in LAS and excellence in the study of the humanities on campus.

IPRH-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellows 2013–15

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has awarded its 2013–15 Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Humanities to two scholars chosen from an international field of applicants.

The IPRH-Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellows in the Humanities spend a two-year term in residence at Illinois, where they conduct research on their proposed projects and teach two courses per year in an appropriate academic department. The Fellows also participate in activities related to their research at the IPRH, in the teaching department, and on the Illinois campus. Each Post-Doctoral Fellow gives a public lecture that showcases his or her research at Illinois. This is the fourth year of the IPRH-Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship program. The fellowships are funded by a six-year $1.25 million grant awarded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to IPRH in 2010.

IPRH Event Grants Recipients, 2012-13

IPRH is proud to announce the recipients of its 2012–13 Event Grants. Ten applicants received IPRH support, one Large Grant and nine Co-Sponsorship Grants. This marks the third year of an opportunity for significant funding to Illinois faculty to organize a public event (or series of events) that will be of interest to faculty and graduate students in the humanities, arts, and humanistic social sciences. (The program was previously known as the Collaborative Research Projects.)

IPRH awarded Andrew W. Mellon Foundation grant

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded $100,000 to the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities (IPRH) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to fund the planning of an extensive consortium of humanities institutes in the Midwest and beyond. By leveraging the strengths of multiple distinctive campuses across institutional boundaries, the initiative, titled “Humanities Without Walls,” aims to create new avenues for collaborative research, teaching, and the production of scholarship in the humanities, forging and sustaining areas of inquiry that cannot be created or maintained without cross-institutional cooperation.

The grant will make possible a series of planning meetings, led by IPRH Director and Principal Investigator Dianne Harris, that will lead to the creation of a road map for cross-institutional collaboration among faculty and graduate students at the 13 institutions that belong to the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), plus the University of Notre Dame and the University of Illinois at Chicago. The project seeks to expand our sense of the university in ways that are in keeping with the expanding realm of humanities communication and research. In other words, the consortium is meant not simply to facilitate extramural opportunities for scholars, but also to expand the definition of the humanities as both sine muralis and shaped by the singular resources of 15 exceptional research universities.

Two pilot programs, funded partially by the grant and partially by matching funds from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will run throughout the year in parallel to the planning meetings, serving as proofs of concept for the project. Professor Ted Underwood (Department of English) will lead a pilot collaboration titled “The Uses of Scale in Literary Studies” with colleagues at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Wisconsin, Madison, using the HathiTrust Research Center (an extensive digital library) as a focus of their collaborative activities. Professor Charles Wright (Department of English and Program in Medieval Studies) will lead, in primary collaboration with colleagues at Notre Dame, a project titled “Performing the Middle Ages,” which involves faculty participants from many CIC institutions, including the University of Iowa, Indiana University, Ohio State, University of Michigan, Purdue, the University of Chicago, and the University of Minnesota.

Once the planning phase is complete, IPRH Director Harris plans to seek opportunities to fully fund the creation of a multi-institutional consortium of humanities centers that would serve as a re-granting program to facilitate collaborative projects not possible by other means. We are very grateful to the Mellon Foundation for their continued support of the humanities at Illinois.
