Those making land use decisions to reduce the harmful effects of climate change have focused almost exclusively on greenhouse gasesanalyzing, for example, how much carbon dioxide is released when a forest is cleared to grow crops. A new study led by U of I researchers aims to present a more complete pictureto incorporate other characteristics of ecosystems that also influence climate.

Much to my delight I have discovered two common threads at this great university: learning never rests and helping others is a way of life. During Winter Break many of our students and faculty pursued fascinating educational and service-oriented opportunities in the United States and across the planet. Ports of call included New Orleans, Silicon Valley, India, Australia, China, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Peru.

The team found consistent patterns of reproductive dysfunction in amphibians, fish, reptiles and mammals exposed to the chemical. Atrazine is the second-most widely used herbicide in the U.S. More than 75 million pounds of it are applied to corn and other crops, and it is the most commonly detected pesticide contaminant of groundwater, surface water and rain in the U.S.
