Charla Krupp, journalism alumna and popular author and commentator remembered

Charla Krupp (JOURN ’75) died on Jan. 23 in New York City at age 58. Krupp was well known for her fashion and beauty savvy having served in top positions at Glamour magazine, as popular commentator on several television shows, and most recently as author of “How Not to Look Old” and “How to Never Look Fat Again.” While Krupp found much success in New York City, she never forgot her connection back to her alma mater, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She had a big heart for students that desired to establish careers in major media markets like New York City. Krupp offered numerous internships and helped make connections for many students, particularly female journalism students in the College of Media. Krupp was an active member on the College’s National Advisory Board and will be greatly missed. To honor Charla’s legacy and continue her generosity to women in media in perpetuity, the Krupp/Zoglin family has established The Charla Krupp Memorial Fund at the University of Illinois College of Media. MACS Professor Kent Ono quoted in CNNs blog on Asian Roles in Hollywood films

Kent Ono, professor of media and cinema studies, discusses the casting of white actors in roles written for Asian actors in mainstream Hollywood media in a recent CNN blog. Ono notes that Asian characters have been replaced with white American versions played by big-name Hollywood stars. According to Ono, “not only do Asian-American actors find this a displacement of their ability to work as laborers, as performers in these sort of roles – they also find this an affront to their identity, to their work to overcome racism and be seen as legitimate actors.” Read the whole article…

Digital Bootcamp 2012 Registration Open

Digital Bootcamp is a new, exciting two-day workshop hosted by the College of Media. College students interested in journalism, advertising, media content creation and design in the new digital media landscape can explore the newest tools in digital media in sessions led by top industry practitioners.

Digital Bootcamp will also include a keynote address – Building Your Brand Online – which will address the importance of and best practices in building your own brand using the latest social media and digital tools. The program will conclude with a panel on future careers in the new digital media landscape. By the end of the workshop, students will know how to develop their digital brand and digital portfolio using various functions of WordPress.

Associate Dean Chris Benson presents on microaggressions at a racial justice summit

Christopher Benson, Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Journalism, recently presented on microaggressions at a racial justice summit held at Illinois State University in Normal. His topic "Everyday Racism: Content, Context, Consequences" focused on the indiginities suffered by members of traditionally marginalized groups in professional and campus encounters. He also discussed the media role in reinforcing stereotypes through the framing and representation of these groups. The summit, co-sponsored by the YWCA McLean County at ISU, was attended by community leaders, teachers, ISU faculty and administrators.

Journalism Alumna double winner at National Entertainment Journalism Awards

The Hollywood Reporter Senior Writer, Leslie Bruce (MS '05 JOURN), was a double winner at the fourth annual National Entertainment Journalism Awards held in downtown Los Angeles. She won first place in the category of Feature/Series, print over 1,000 words, for her article written with Judith Newman called "Inside Kardashian Inc." College recognizes December graduates

The College of Media hosted a reception to honor its 66 December 2011 graduates. More than 100 people, including the graduates, their family members and friends, and College faculty and staff gathered at Campbell Hall for Public Telecommunication to celebrate this important milestone.

Interim Dean Jan Slater welcomed guests and congratulated the graduates, encouraging them that their hard work in the College will serve them well in all their future endeavors. Parents and friends expressed their excitement for their graduates’ accomplishments and enjoyed meeting many of the College’s faculty, advisors and staff. Photos of the event…
