Using Pliny to Annotate Digital Resources @ e-Research Roundtable - July 1

Please join us on July 1st from 12:30-2:00 in room 341 for the next e-Research Roundtable (ERRT). For our first roundtable related to the new Open Annotation Collaboration Mellon-funded grant project, we will examine John Bradley's PLINY annotation tool. In particular, we will discuss how and to what extent PLINY can be used to perform some of the scholarly functions described in Renear, Allen H.; DeRose, Steve J.; Mylonas, Elli; van Dam, Andries (1999) An Outline for a Functional Taxonomy of Annotation. Yan Wang and Tim Cole will lead the discussion which will include demonstrations of PLINY. Carole Palmer and Melissa Cragin will be leading an informal discussion on "What Defines a Data Community?". ERRT is a new CIRSS research study group focusing on information problems in the curation and integration of digital research data. The seminar is for collegial exchange around participants? research ideas and activities, and open problems and advances in the field. It is modeled after the Metadata Roundtable (MDRT), which we?ve held regularly since 2003, and is open to faculty, students, and other professionals and researchers across campus.

Lorcan Dempsey, Vice President and Chief Strategist for the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) will deliver the keynote address for the 2009 Summer Institute for Data Curation in the Humanities. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Reception to follow. This event will be held on May 21st in 126 LIS from 3:30 to 5:00. The Data Curation Education Program (DCEP) at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science will hold a Summer Institute for Humanities Data Curation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, from May 18 through 22. The Institute will be directed by Allen H. Renear, Associate Dean for Research at GSLIS, and sessions will be conducted by leading specialists in the various fields that are involved in the curation of humanities data. Data curation is the active and on-going management of research data through its lifecycle of interest and usefulness to scholarship, science, and education. With support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, GSLIS has been a pioneer in the development of data curation education within library and information science. Last year''s institute focused on data curation for science data. This year's workshop focuses on data services and curation activities for humanities data, particularly in academic libraries.

The Data Curation Education Program (DCEP) at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science will hold a Summer Institute for Humanities Data Curation at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The Institute will be directed by Allen H. Renear, Associate Professor and Associate Dean for Research at GSLIS, and sessions will be conducted by leading specialists in the various fields that are involved in the curation of humanities data. The Institute is sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMSL). Registration for this event is now closed.

Open Provenance Model @ e-Research Roundtable - May 6

Jim Myers and Joe Futrelle from the Cyberenvironments and Technologies Group at NCSA will be leading an informal discussion on the Open Provenance Model. The discussion will include a general overview of the technical scope of the Open Provenance Model, the international community and "Provenance Challenge" activities driving its development, and NCSA's provenance management technologies. While OPM has been driven primarily by scientific workflow interests, NCSA's interest is broader; the discussion will also include OPM's potential value in electronic notebooks/electronic records, community model validation and reference data development, 'active' curation, and long-term preservation.
