illini-alert: a note to parents
February 9, 2009
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign would like for you to be aware of a change in one of our emergency communication systems. Illinois recently switched to a new provider for the emergency text notification system.
The new system, which is offered by a company called MyStateUSA, has several improved features, including much faster delivery times, easier registration, and greater integrity in times of crisis because it is hosted off campus.
Another significant change is that the new emergency notification system allows students to invite two additional contacts to receive e-mail and text message notifications. ??
This week your student will be asked to register or review their registration for emergency notifications.? If you want to receive the same emergency messages indicating an imminent threat to the safety and security of the campus community, be sure your student enters your e-mail address as an additional contact.? You will receive an e-mail with instructions for completing your registration on-line.?
There will be a need for occasional tests of the system. We will alert you about tests as they are scheduled.? The first test will be Feb. 17th at approximately 10:00 a.m. If you have been invited as an additional contact and you do not receive a text or e-mail message during the test, please contact the CITES Help Desk at firstname.lastname@example.org at your convenience.
Registration for emergency notifications will not put your information on any other list or register you for any other campus communications.? If you choose not to receive emergency e-mails or text messages, our homepage (illinois.edu) will always have the latest information in emergency situations.
Thank you for the role you play in ensuring student safety.? By encouraging your student to register for emergency messages and familiarize themselves with the Division of Public Safety recommendations (under "safety resources" at www.dps.illinois.edu), you will help prepare our campus to address any potential emergency.
Thank you and warm regards,
Director of Emergency Planning
