The University of Illinois boasts the second largest academic library in the United States and Canada behind Harvard. Therefore, the University of Illinois has the largest public academic library in North America with over 12 million volumes. The Undergraduate and Main libraries are connected underground by a tunnel and form the cornerstone of more than 25 departmental libraries and special collections. The Main Library contains the Main Stacks, home of the majority of the library's collections.
