  • Brief Turnitin Outage

The Turnitin service experienced intermittent service in the afternoon of Monday, April 18. The Turnitin support team reports that this lasted for roughly 90 minutes between 3pm and 5pm. This may have affected Learn@Illinois Moodle course sites using the Turnitin service.  Students attempting to submit assignments to Turnitin activities may have been unable to do so in this time frame.

  • UPDATED - Brief Moodle outage - 2/17/2016

Upgrade was completed successfully and the service is back online.

Moodle is currently down for a small, planned upgrade.

This is a very small update focusing on three issues:

    1. Making more regions of the website clickable via the mobile interface.

    2. Allowing the Turnitin user agreement to be accepted in the original window.

    3. Resolving a bug which affected the login of a small number of users.

  • TurnItIn Service Alert - Resolved

TurnItIn reports that they have addressed the issue and stabilized their service.  To continue monitoring the situation, please visit the TurnItIn Twitter Feed

    8:30 AM

TurnItIn, the anti-plagiarism tool used on Learn@Illinois, is currently experiencing a DDOS attack which is affecting our use of TurnItIn. The issues began around 8:15 this morning.  This is being worked on as a high priority by TurnItIn engineers. They have instructed us that you can follow their status on twitter @TurnitinStatus.  We will update this post when we know more.

Moodle will have a brief outage starting at 7 AM Wednesday, January 13th to perform some follow-up patches after last weeks upgrade.  We anticipate this lasting 30 minutes, but allow for possible downtime or performance issues until 8 AM.  We will post more information on the blog during the upgrade.

7:20 AM: Site in Maintenance Mode.  Updates initiated.

7:40 AM: Site back to normal operation.  Maintenance completed:

The Learn@Illinois service is down for a scheduled upgrade. We will be back up very soon.

After a successful upgrade, the Learn@Illinos service is back online. The upgrade took approximately 71 minutes.

The Learn@Illinois service is down for a short time more to perform some DB maintenance. We should be up shortly.

The Learn@Illinois service is now back up; thank you for your patience.

  • Learn@Illinois Unscheduled down time

The Learn@Illinois service was down for approximately 11 minutes starting at 2:13PM on Monday, December 14th. We are investigating the cause and making sure that the problem does not repeat itself.

  • Learn@Illinois Scheduled Downtime (Successful)

The Learn@Illinois service will be down starting at 5:30AM on Thursday, November 10th while we update the system. We should be back up momentarily

The Learn@Illinois service upgrae was done successfully.

Some users will be asked to resolve inconsitencies in their gradebook the next time they access the gradebook. This is done by clicking the correct button. These users should resolve these inconsistencies. More informaton about this change can be found here ( Please direct any quesitons to

  • Learn@illinois Down for Upgrade

Due to some small technical difficulties, we were unable to perform the upgrade this morning. These difficulties had nothing to do with the upgrade, but rather with the process of the upgrade.  We are planning on performing the upgrade at 5:30 A.M. tomorrow morning, 11/12/2015.  The upgrade window Thursday morning will be from 5:30 AM to 8 AM.

The Learn@Illinois service will be down for an upgrade starting at 4:00AM on Wednesday, November 11th. The service will return to operation well before 8:00AM

  • Learn@Illinois Upgrade on Wednesday, November 11th

On Wednesday, November 11th, starting at 4:00AM (one hour before our normal maintenance window), we will be updating our Learn@Illinois system. The main purpose of this upgrade is to alleviate some of the gradebook slowness that many users have been experiencing this semester, especially in large courses. We anticipate that we will be done well before 8:00AM which is the normal end of our maintenance window.

While our tests have shown significant improvement in gradebook performance when conducting normal tasks such as moving grades from one column to another, we are going to continue to work to improve performance even more. Making the gradebook even better is still the primary focus of our January 2016 upgrade.

The major components of this upgrade include:

    • Upgrading the Moodle version from 2.8.6 to 2.8.9 which will capture improvements made by the core Moodle developers.
    • Changing the default so that each grade's contribution to the total score for each student is hidden. This has been a major cause of the slowness that large courses have experienced since this value had to be recalculated any time any grade operation was completed.
    • Not calculating this value when the item was hidden in the Gradebook User Report.

If you have any questions about this upgrade, please drop us an email at

    Thanks,The Learn@Illinois Development Team

  • Gradebook Slowness Update

    Hello Users,

We have been working on a solution to the gradebook slowness that has been a big issue this semester, especially for larger courses. We installed an upgraded version on our shadow system that you are welcome to try out. The shadow system is navigated much like production and can be accessed at This system is a duplicate of our production system and is only to be used for testing purposes. Any work that is done on this system can disappear at any time and the database is usually overwritten every night. So please use the shadow system only for experimentation and not to do any work you wish to keep. We would advise against sending students to this system except in very limited cases. Please keep in mind that the shadow system is running less robust hardware than production so performance here will be slower than when it is implemented on production. Also note that the theme on our shadow system looks different than on our production system and that we had a little fun with cat pictures.

Much of the current slowness seems to stem from Moodle calculating each grade’s contribution to the course total which is a column that is shown on the gradebook user report. This column can be hidden under Course Grade Settings (which can be accessed from the drop-down menu after accessing the course's gradebook), though the current system would still calculate it regardless of this setting. The new version brings three main changes:

    1. If the "Show contribution to course total" is set to hide, this value will not be calculated.
    2. We have made this setting hidden by default for all courses.
    3. Upgrades in the latest version bring additional performance improvements on the backend as well as fixing two grading bugs

The result of these changes is that gradebook performance is greatly improved. In one test, operation that took ~350 seconds with the old method took ~21 seconds with the new code. The course we tested this in has over 1700 student enrollments.

We are still in the process of doing final testing on this fix, and we are going to continue to work on making the gradebook performance even better. These fixes will be implemented on our production server on Wednesday morning the 11th assuming the rest of our testing goes well.
