Title: The Analysis of Water Availability Indicators and Access to Available Water in the Developing, Semi-Arid, Rural Setting.

Discussions of global water problems that began in the mid- 1970’s resulted in a United Nations declaration that “…all peoples, whatever their stage of development and their social and economic conditions, have the right to have access to drinking water in quantities and of a quality equal to their basic needs.” In 2015, 663 million people still did not have access to improved drinking water; the majority of which live in the rural, water scarce regions of lesser developed nations. This thesis used a systematic review to evaluate access to available potable water for these householders using the Republic of Kenya as a case example. Key findings are that existing indicators focus on the physical availability of the water; they do not give metrics for the quantity or quality of the water, nor do they account for access to it.
