An outgrowth of Illinois’ land-grant tradition, our campus public engagement commitments link us to a variety of communities in the region and the state. In 2014, the University of Illinois Extension celebrated 100 years of bringing research-based information and assistance to the public. Scholarship, collaboration and partnership are watchwords that connect the innovation and discovery in campus labs and classrooms to greater communities, teaching invaluable lessons about local needs and offering the chance to both give-back and pay-it-forward. Not just in the United States, but in countries where resources and capitol are non-existant. Units like Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWBO) have created animations to visually teach farmers in developing countries about farming, saftey and health without having to teach them learn our language.
Our Public Engagement Portal features 1062 programs and events in 564 locations displayed on the current map. Our online undergraduate program in Earth, Society, & Environmental Sustainability ranked #6 in Non Profit Colleges Online’s 2016 Best Online Bachelor’s in Environmental Science & Sustainability. This constant traffic between the university and the world beyond it is key to the university’s continued success, both as an economic engine in the public and private sectors, and in wider civic arena as well.
