On Friday, September 30th, the MBA alumni committee sponsored a golf tournament and professional development event at Stone Creek Golf Course in Urbana. The winning team consisted of alumni Jasen Schrock (MBA ’09) and Matt Arient (MBA ’08) along with Associate Director of Admissions Ben Moreland. These golfing gurus ended up with a fantastic score of 5 under par.
After the tournament, students, faculty and alumni mingled during a cocktail hour and throughout dinner. According to second-year MBA student Tim Kingery, “This event was a fantastic opportunity to catch up with several of the alumni I met at last year’s banquet. Events like these demonstrate the strength and diversity of the Illinois alumni network.”
After dinner, Professor Greg Northcraft gave an interesting talk on Salary Negotiations in a Tough Economy. Professor Northcraft encouraged attendees to make themselves indispensible, especially in difficult economic times. By taking on difficult or unpopular tasks, employees may find themselves less susceptible to layoffs and having greater leverage in salary and promotion discussions. Many of the students in attendance found Professor Northcraft’s advice timely as they seek full-time employment opportunities.
Events like this are great reminders of the strength of the Illinois MBA alumni network. Currently, there are about 7,500 Illinois MBA alumni living in 63 countries throughout the world.
Speaking of strength, the Fighting Illini rallied to top Northwestern 38-35 in a thrilling game the next day. Go Illini!
