  • Industrial Decarbonization Fellowship with the U.S. Department of Energy

    The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's (EERE) Science, Technology, and Policy (STP) Program serves as a next step in the educational and professional development of scientists and engineers by providing opportunities to participate in policy-related projects in Washington, D.C.  Participants will become part of a group of highly-trained scientists and engineers with the education, background, and experience to be part of the workforce that supports the DOE's mission in the future.  

    The Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) is part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.  With 30% of primary energy-related emissions attributable to the industrial sector, IEDO plays an important role in supporting the reduction of U.S. CO2 emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2005 levels) and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

  • 2024 NNSA PATH Scholarships

    The Program Award for Technical and Higher-Education (PATH), sponsored by National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), offers scholarships to students from Minority Serving Institutions pursuing a technical certificate, associate, bachelor, or graduate degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM)-discipline that supports the critical needs of the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).  The NNSA PATH Scholarship will provide financial support to students who demonstrate a desire to pursue a STEM-focused academic pathway that applies to the NNSA Mission Directorate; expose students to STEM-related research taking place at community colleges, undergraduate and graduate colleges and universities; connect students to other NNSA MSI-supported students, faculty, and alumni; and expose students to STEM-based careers at NNSA and the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).

  • 2024 CMAA-Chicago Scholarship

  • Call for 2024 WIE Orientation Volunteers

    Apply for a volunteer leadership role at Women in Engineering’s 2024 WIE Orientation, which will take place from August 21 – 22, 2024.

    Before orientation, WIE mentors will help facilitate a series of virtual group mentoring sessions with first-year and transfer students to help prepare them before coming to campus.  During orientation, WIE mentors will help WIE staff facilitate orientation activities and logistics.

  • Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship Program

    The U.S. Department of Energy’s Grid Deployment Office (GDO), Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs (IE), Office of State and Community Energy Programs (SCEP), and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) are seeking candidates for the Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship program who have an interest in the clean energy transition.  Innovator Fellows will get hands-on learning experience supporting projects that the Host Institutions identify as critical to advancing clean energy solutions that Decarbonize the power system; electrify transportation and industry, and make the U.S. power system more resilient, equitable, and inclusive.

  • 2024 New Mexico Lab-Embedded Entrepreneur Program (NM LEEP)

    The New Mexico Lab-Embedded Entrepreneur Program (NM LEEP) matches entrepreneurs with seed capital; a large network of mentors, customers, and investors; and the unique expertise and resources of Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos) and Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia).

    NM LEEP offers fellows:

    • A two-year collaboration to advance their technology with DOE National Laboratory researchers
    • Customized entrepreneurial training
    • Connections to networks and business resources with potential strategic partners, investors, and customers

    Annual stipends range from $54,000 to $120,000, plus health insurance, travel reimbursement, and relocation allowance.  Stipend rates are determined by NM LEEP officials, and are based on the candidate's academic and professional background.

  • 2024 Community Energy Fellowship Program

    The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program is a $550 million formula- and competitive- grant program that provides direct and flexible funding to more than 2,700 state, local, and Tribal governments across the United States.  The EECBG Program is designed to meet community needs and implement projects aligned to over 14 eligible clean energy use areas.

    Fellows will be embedded in communities around the country and will bring new perspectives and skills into local governments and tribes.  Fellows will be assigned to selected local governments or tribes, or teams of them, that are participating in the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) Program.  Under the guidance of the Host mentor, Fellows will learn while providing technical expertise and support to hosts in the creation, administration, and launch of new clean energy projects and programs as funded through the EECBG program. Participants will receive a stipend based on their academic and professional background.

  • 2024 FLAME Summer Research to PhD Program at Cornell University

    The Future Leaders in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering (FLAME) Summer Program is Cornell University's recruitment program for engineering undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds who are doing significant work in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).  Program highlights include academic preparation for graduate school, assistance with preparation of applications to Ph.D. programs, and a $6300 stipend.  The FLAME Program runs from June 9 – August 9, 2024.

  • Summer 2024 Undergraduate Research in Big Data at the University of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology

    The BigDataX Program is a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site in Chicago, Illinois.  From May 28, 2024 – August 2, 2024, undergraduate students will spend 10 weeks immersed in research on Big Data at either the Illinois Institute of Technology or the University of Chicago, working on large scale distributed systems (e.g. Amazon AWS Cloud, Chameleon Cloud, Aurora Supercomputer, and Mystic).  Selected applicants will receive a $7000 stipend.

  • Internships with NOMAD XI

    The Nonlinear Mechanics and Dynamics (NOMAD) Research Institute seeks to tackle research challenges in the field of nonlinear mechanics and dynamics by forming diverse teams of B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. students.  The program is sponsored by Sandia National Laboratories and the University of New Mexico, and it will run from June 17 – August 8, 2024 at the University of New Mexico campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  Internships are available in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, material science, and applied mathematics, and you will be matched with research projects based on your research interests and skills.

  • Summer 2024 XR Opportunity for U of I Undergrads through CI MED Jump Simulation Center

  • 2024 Global Research Immersion Program for Young Scientists (GripS)

    Zhejiang University is very pleased to announce that the applications for their inaugural Global Research Immersion Program for Young Scientists (GripS) are open.  The GripS program is co-developed by four esteemed universities in China’s Yangtze River Delta region, namely Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, Fudan University in Shanghai, and Nanjing University in Nanjing.  The program will be held on campus from June to August 2024

    GripS will allow students to elevate their undergraduate journey by working closely with esteemed professors at one of the four universities.  Students will be able to immerse themselves in a rewarding research experience, discover the region's innovative potential, and become part of a community of global thinkers who are actively shaping the future.  Opportunities for cultural interaction set against the vibrant backdrop of the Yangtze River Delta will also be provided by the four host universities, including company visits, city tours, and Chinese cultural events.

  • U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of International Affairs Fellow

    The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Science, Technology and Policy (STP) Program is designed to provide opportunities for postgraduates to participate in programs, projects, and activities at the Office of International Affairs.  Fellows will receive hands-on experience that provides an understanding of the mission, operations, and culture of DOE.  As a result, fellows will gain deep insight into the federal government's role in the creation and implementation of global energy policies; apply their scientific and technical knowledge to the development of solutions to issues of importance to the DOE; and continue their education and involvement in areas that support the DOE mission.  The DOE Office of International Affairs is seeking ORISE fellows to support its mission.

  • IBM-IL Discovery Accelerator Institute (IIDAI) Undergraduate Research Experience (URE)

    The IBM-Illinois Discovery Accelerator Institute (IIDAI) is a new model of academic-industry partnership designed to increase access to technology education and skill development to spur breakthroughs in emerging areas of technology to accelerate the discovery of solutions to complex global challenges.  Its goal is to enhance the STEM pipeline to graduate school and industry by offering undergraduate students, especially students from underrepresented groups in STEM, the opportunity to do research through the Undergraduate Research Experience (URE) Program.  Successful applicants will participate in one of the 18 research projects connected to the institute’s thrust areas, including Hybrid Cloud & AI, Materials Discovery, Quantum Computing, and Sustainability.

    Women, first-generation students, and members of underrepresented minority groups are encouraged to apply.

  • Summer 2024 NCSA SPIN Internship Program

    The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) has a history of nurturing innovative concepts, and some of the best ideas have come from highly motivated, creative undergraduate students.  The Students Pushing INnovation (SPIN) Internship Program was launched to provide University of Illinois undergraduates with the opportunity to participate in hands-on research and contribute to interdisciplinary projects covering focused research areas in AI, Quantum Computing, Data and Computational Sciences, Health Sciences, and Physics and Astronomy, among others. 

    The Summer 2024 SPIN session will take place from June 3 – July 26, 2024, and the SPIN program is currently accepting applications.   They are considering  applications on a rolling basis, so please apply early.

  • 2nd Annual NCSA Student Research Conference

    The 2nd Annual NCSA Student Research Conference will take place on April 23, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m., at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), located at 1205 W. Clark Street in Urbana.  The NCSA invites UIUC students whose research is closely aligned with NCSA research areas of interest, such as Artificial Intelligence, Arts & Humanities, Astrophysics, Digital Agriculture, Data and Computational Sciences, Earth & Environment, and Health Sciences, to give a lightning talk, present a poster, and/or organize a workshop session.

  • 2024 REU FoDOMMaT Program

    FoDOMMaT (The Future of Discovery: Training Students to Build and Apply Open Source Machine Learning Models and Tools) is a 10-week on-site summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).  FoDOMMaT will bring together 10 undergraduate students, particularly those who would otherwise lack such an opportunity, to work on cutting-edge projects from May 20 – July 26, 2024.  The program will begin with a week-long training where students are taught machine learning (ML) / deep learning (/DL) methods.  They will work for the remaining nine weeks on a specific research project under the guidance of a pair of research mentors, one from the project’s research area and the other with expertise in machine learning.

    The Research Experience and Mentoring (REM) Program is a paid opportunity for students to participate in a combined 2024 summer experience:  6 weeks doing cutting-edge research at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, from May 20 – June 28, 2024, and 4 weeks mentoring kids participating in an NSBE SEEK camp.  

    The research focus this summer is Energy for Our Growing World--how a wide range of energy sources (renewables, emerging energy technologies—biofuels, solar, nuclear, wind, shale, and other fossil fuels) serve the needs of people and communities, and how we balance those needs against the impact these energy sources differentially have on our world.
