The MBM Program's fall Frontiers in Miniature Brain Machinery lecture series begins Sept. 4 with Justin Rhodes, an associate professor of psychology. Rhodes will speak at 4 p.m. in Room 2269 Beckman on “Completely implantable, injectable, wireless microLEDs for optogenetic manipulations of exercise-brain interactions.”

This workshop series centers the needs of grad students and postdocs, which are to produce excellent science and work within the expectations of their department and lab group, in order to create an atmosphere of collaboration, inclusion, openness, and listening. We will work with trainees in a small group setting through four stages of skill development.

Patty Jones, associate director for research at the Beckman Institute, will speak about publication ethics, including authorship and predatory journals, at the first fall Responsible Conduct of Research seminar. Hosted by the Beckman Institute, the talk begins at noon Wednesday, Sept. 17, in Room 1005. The series is targeted toward students, postdocs, and faculty members.

Illinois alumna Jen Heemstra, associate professor of chemistry at Emory University and Chemical and Engineering News columnist, will speak in the Beckman Institute auditorium. She will discuss why success is more likely when you’re willing to fail. Following the talk, a Simple Poster Session in the atrium showcases research illustrated with one simple idea.

Melissa Littlefield, a professor of English whose interests include sociotechnical studies, “the body,” and culture, has written about the cultural concept and consequences of technologies such as lie detectors, magnetic resonance imaging, and electroencephalogram. Her talk is titled, "Neuro Cultures, Inside and Outside the Laboratory." Lunch will be provided.

Michelle Lore, REDCap Applications Specialist at the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute at Illinois, will talk about REDCap – what it is and how to use it here on campus. This is mostly a tool for human subjects research – so behavioral and social sciences grad students, postdocs, and faculty would be especially interested. Lunch will be provided.
