Sanders named ECE ILLINOIS department head

Professor William H. Sanders is ECE ILLINOIS’ new department head, Engineering at Illinois Dean Andreas C. Cangellaris announced Thursday, July 3. His appointment is effective August 16, 2014.

Researchers receive Best Paper Award, Carter Award for RnS monitoring research

ECE graduate students Cuong PhamZachary Estrada and CS graduate student Phuong Cao, along with their advisors, CSL Professor Ravishankar Iyer and CSL Research Professor Zbigniew Kalbarczyk, who are all part of CSL’s DEPEND research group, are working to achieve both reliability and security simultaneously via continuous monitoring of virtual machines, which are the basic building blocks of cloud computing. The team received the inaugural Best Paper Award at last month’s 2014 IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Dependable Systems and Networks (DSN). Additionally, Pham was recognized for his outstanding PhD research in this area and was awarded the William C. Carter Award.

Pilawa earns PELS young engineer award

Robert Pilawa-Podgurski has been recognized with the Richard M. Bass Outstanding Young Power Electronics Engineer Award by the IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS), the field’s leading professional organization. The award is given each year to one of PELS’s members — which include more than 7,000 researchers and practitioners — in recognition of early-career developments and innovations in power electronics.

Dominguez-Garcia invited to attend NAE's U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium

ECE Assistant Professor Alejandro Dominguez-Garcia has been selected by the National Academy of Engineering to attend the United States Frontiers of Engineering Symposium, along with 82 other engineers who have all been determined by the academy to be future leaders of the engineering field. The event will be Sept. 11-13 in Irvine, California.

App software edits photos, videos in real time

Posting selfies to Instagram and Facebook has been popular among teens and young adults for many years now, but ADSC researchers are now upping the selfie-game with their development of an app that allows people to take a short video clip and alter the background using pre-designed animated templates to create a Hollywood style mini-movie in seconds.

CSL faculty bring home Engineering at Illinois awards

Several CSL faculty were honored at the 50th-annual faculty award ceremony for Engineering at Illinois. Professor Wen-mei W. Hwu was awarded the Collins Award for Innovative Teaching, Assistant Professor Shobha Vasudevan earned a Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research, and three ECE professors were named Engineering Council Outstanding Advisors: CSL's Professor Jose E. Schutt-Aine, CSL and ITI Associate Professor Rakesh Kumar, and ITI's Assistant Professor Robert Pilawa-Podgurski.

National Science Foundation fellows pursue research at ECE ILLINOIS

Five ECE ILLINOIS graduate students have received National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships, including two fellows, Ryan Corey and Minji Kim, who are conducting groundbreaking research alongside CSL professors.

In the News: USENIX researchers get a grip on Hadoop performance

Cristina Abad, a May 2014 computer science Ph.D. graduate at Illinois, has developed a benchmark designed to model the performance of next-generation storage systems, called MimesisBench, which was featured in ITWorld and PCWorld. Abad worked with CSL's Roy Campbell on this research.
