Novel flight controller may reduce aircraft failures

At the end of February, CSL Prof. Naira Hovakimyan (MechSE) and her research team will travel to Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California to support flight testing of a Learjet augmented with an L1 adaptive flight control law. It will be the first time an L1 adaptive system is tested in flight on a manned aircraft -- in this case, a Learjet.

Research looks to verify power networks at the device level

Securing our power grids from malicious attacks is critical to ensuring a safe power grid, and many researchers are working on solving this problem by focusing on the entire system. However, ITI research scientist Katherine Davis is tackling the problem in a new and innovative way in her new $391,014, three-year NSF grant to study verification of cyber-physical critical infrastructures at the device level.

Around CSL

  • CSL Social Hour is back! Join us Fridays at 3 p.m. in CSL 369 for refreshments and to learn about the research going on at CSL.
  • Interested in presenting your research at the CSL Student Conference later this month? Contact Mary (hnguyn10@illinois.edu) or Kiran (thekump2@illinois.edu) for more information! The deadline for Illinois post-docs and students has been extended to this Friday, February 6, 2015.
  • No-Cost Visualization Services Available at NCSA - David Bock, Visualization Programmer at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, is seeking opportunities for collaboration with computational researchers in engineering who are interested in developing custom data visualization imagery. There is no cost to researchers, as Bock’s work is supported through the NSF-funded project XSEDE (Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment). Collaboration is awarded through an allocation application process as described here and Bock will assist with the application process. If you are interested in collaborating with David, please feel free to contact him directly at dbock@illinois.edu.
