Uplink: A Newsletter for the Faculty, Staff, and Students of the Coordinated Science Laboratory
February 16, 2015
Klara Nahrstedt is the new Director of the Coordinated Science Laboratory, according to an announcement today from College of Engineering Dean Andreas Cangellaris.
Nahrstedt, the Ralph M. and Catherine V. Fisher Professor in the Department of Computer Science, has served as acting director of CSL since 2013. Her appointment is effective Feb. 16, 2015, pending approval by the University’s Board of Trustees.
CSL Associate Professor Alejandro Dominguez-Garcia won a 2014 Campus Distinguished Promotion Award, an honor from Provost Ilesanmi Adesida. The award recognizes recently promoted faculty members who have shown special promise in their fields.
In spring 2014, both the business and technology news pages excitedly announced Facebook’s $2 billion acquisition of Oculus VR, the maker of a virtual reality gaming headset called Oculus Rift. CSL Professor Steve LaValle, an Illinois alumnus (PhD EE ’95), has a special insight into the development of VR technology. Since taking leave from the university in September 2012, LaValle helped lead Oculus’ R&D efforts as its head scientist.
The Internet is now a goldmine of personal information about individuals, collected both voluntarily, through methods such as frequent flier/shopper incentives, social media or Amazon reviews, and involuntarily, such as the U.S. Census or medical records. While much of the information is anonymous, the ability to search information and compare it to other data sets makes today’s data especially susceptible to privacy violations.
CSL Professor Pramod Viswanath was recently awarded a $500,000, three-year NSF grant to conduct research on statistical data privacy, in hopes of developing a way to still use the vital information in these databases, without it become a privacy concern.
The 2015 CSL Student Conference returns for its 10th year Feb. 26 and 27. The conference, organized by students and hosted at the Coordinated Science Laboratory, features both invited talks by well-known researchers and student presentations.
CSL Professor Vikram Adve has been named a 2014 Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). In his citation he was recognized “for developing the LLVM compiler and for contributions to parallel computing and software security.” He is one of 49 ACM members being recognized this year for their contributions to computing.
CSL Professor J. Gary Eden, who holds the Gilmore Endowed Professorship in Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.
