News and Updates
Staff Changes at the CCB
The CCB will be welcoming our new graduate assistant Stacia McKeever this August. Stacia received her MFA in Painting from Indiana University in 2013 and her BFA in Painting from Western Illinois University in 2010. She has enjoyed teaching drawing, painting, and 2D design to students ranging in age from toddlers to adults. Over the last year, Stacia has worked in the high school library at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools where she has found that empowering students to become creative, curious, independent thinkers brings added meaning to her interests. Though research and self-directed learning began as the foundation for her artistic practice, they have grown into a passion for sharing the importance of lifelong learning with children. Come stop by the CCB this August to welcome her.
Our previous CCB staff members Anna Lapp and Lauren Gray have both graduated this May, and will be working as librarians soon. Anna Lapp has accepted a position as a Youth Services Librarian at Hudson Library and Historical Society in Hudson, Ohio. CCB GA Lauren Gray will be starting her job as a School Librarian at Sunset Ridge in Northfield, Illinois this August. We are sad for Anna and Lauren to go, but excited for the both of them as the move onto the next chapter of their lives.
Summer and Fall Hours
The CCB will continue to operate at reduced hours through the summer, with closures from July 3rd through July 7th due to staff travel. During Summer Interim (August 14th-25th), the CCB will operate at a slightly modified schedule, which will be announced shortly. Regular fall hours will resume at the start of fall classes on August 28th. Please see the CCB website and Facebook pages for the most current scheduling information.

Our Affiliates Out and About
This June, Kate McDowell finished co-leading a 2 day retreat for Illinois Advancement at Allerton Park, where she covered the topics of storytelling and leadership. Later this summer she will be leading two more sessions on storytelling and advancement. She will also be working with the Business School and ACES to re-develop her Storytelling your Career Workshop for a broader professional audience, which has previously been shared with iSchool students. She will also be attending the National Storytelling Network conference in Kansas City from 6/29 to 7/2.
In June, Dr. Deborah Stevenson attended ALA in Chicago to meet with possible future participants for the App Authors project. App Authors is moving into its second summer, partnering with the Douglass Branch of the Champaign Public Library. The project will continue until July 17th. The K-12 LIS licensure office hosted its 3rd Summer Getaway 2017: Professional Development for School Librarians on June 12, 13 and 14. Over 40 Illinois school librarians and iSchool MS students attended this unique professional development opportunity at The iSchool of Illinois. Led by school library professionals, each in-depth daily session focused on a single, high-demand topic. Authentic dialogue, collaboration, and active engagement of attendees was encouraged. Associate Professor Kate McDowell, Assistant Professor and MS/LIS Program Director Nicole A. Cooke, and Graduate Studies Advisor, Karla Lucht facilitated individualized closing sessions for conference attendees. Two closing session recordings are accessible: Storytelling for School Library Leaders and Social Justice and Materials for Youth.

She can see the dilapidated Thornwood Institute, an orphanage for girls that has been long since abandoned, from her bedroom window. Mary’s story is especially heart wrenching, as it explores the repercussions of a broken child protection system, and continued bullying by another orphaned girl. The two tales are woven into an emotional ghost story that will haunt readers well after the last page.
