Announcements for the week of July 31, 2017

August 3 is the deadline to drop a Summer Session 2 course or a Summer Session 1 independent study course with a W recorded. To drop a course, you will need to complete a Late Registration / Late Course Change form with the approval of your academic program. A W will be recorded on your academic record for the course.

August 3 is the deadline to withdraw from ALL Summer Session 2 courses or Summer Session 1 independent study courses. You will need to complete a Withdrawal/Cancellation form and obtain a signature from your academic program. If you are an international student, you will need to get a signature from International Student Scholar Services. W’s will be recorded on your academic record.

August 3 is the deadline to add a Summer Session 2 course or a Summer Session 1 independent study course. You will need to complete a Late Registration / Late Course Change form and obtain the approval of the course instructor and your academic program. If the course is from a department other than your academic program, you will also need to obtain the approval of the enrolling department.

Late Registration / Late Course Change forms and Withdrawal/Cancellation forms need to be delivered to the Graduate College, 204 Coble Hall, before 5:00 p.m. on Reading Day, Thursday, August 3. 

It is important to remember that there are many different summer deadlines (cancellation, withdrawal, credit/no credit, add/drop classes, etc.) because students may attend different sessions of the summer term. If you are considering making changes to your summer registration, please check the registration deadlines for the parts of term in which you are registered.

During the summer semester, the Thesis Office deposited 253 dissertations and 164 theses. Congratulations to all of our Master’s and Doctoral graduates!

"Tell us about your background, experience, and future goals." This workshop offers guidelines and examples for tackling that question in an application.

You’ve nailed the research proposal, but the application also requires a personal or professional goals statement.  What are you going to write?  Karen Ruhleder, Assistant Director of External Fellowships, offers some strategies for approaching these kinds of statements. This workshop will include discussion of successful examples from a variety of fellowship competitions.

The DOT/FHA supports master’s and doctoral research in transportation-related fields encompassing all modes of transportation. Eligible disciplines include, but are not limited to, the sciences, business, human development, aviation, engineering, law, public policy and planning, and transportation. Fellowships offer up to three years of support with a $20,400 annual stipend for master’s students and a $24,000 annual stipend for doctoral students. Fellowships include up to $10,000 annually for tuition. The deadline for the fellowship is August 28, 2017. Consult our listing for further details.

Have you presented a poster recently? The Graduate College is looking for volunteers to present their posters at the New Graduate Student Welcome Reception to showcase the work of Illinois graduate students. The reception will be on Monday, August 28 from 4-6 p.m. Help welcome new grad students to campus by sharing your exciting research!

The Science and Research Opportunities in India (Sci-ROI) organizing committee has started accepting registration for the 2nd annual 'Sci-ROI Young Investigators Meeting - Chicago (YIM-C) for September 9-10, 2017. Sci-ROI, is a volunteer run not-for-profit organization comprising of young Science and Technology scholars and professionals in the USA of South-East Asian origin (for more information please visit: www.sciroi.org). The objective of Sci-ROI is to establish a platform to promote multi-dimensional engagement between the young talented South-East Asian diaspora in the US and India. 

The Illinois Club Ice Hockey Team is looking for a head coach for the upcoming 2017-2018 season. Playing experience at the high school and/or college level is required (coaching experience is a plus, but not required). Along with covering travel expenses for road trips, the team will pay the head coach a stipend as compensation for the time and effort put in throughout the course of the season. To increase diversity in higher education, the Ford Foundation offers predoctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships. The goal is three-fold – increasing university’s ethnic and racial diversity, maximizing the educational benefits of diversity, and increasing the number of professors who use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students.
