What a Wonderful World of Job Shadows

“I hear babies cry, I watch them grow.  They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know.”

Louis Armstrong’s famous song, What a Wonderful World, reflects on the things he loves about the world, including watching children grow and learn.

Companies that host job shadows see them as an opportunity to help students grow and learn. They can introduce students to their company and teach them more about the industry. These students could be future employees and leaders of their industry, so the companies want to help them as much as they can.

Job shadows are a great opportunity for students to learn about a company or a position. They give students a better understanding of their career interests and what job responsibilities could look like. They also allow students to get a taste of company culture and network with professionals. Job shadows are a lower time commitment, than an internship, but they can give students a better idea of what they want to do and build opportunities for internships in the future.

Student Spotlight

Sydney Mumm, a senior in Agriculture and Consumer Economics, found a new career path by participating in a job shadow.

During her sophomore year, Mumm got in contact with a GROWMARK employee and set up a job shadow to visit the different departments within the company. After talking to the human resources department, she knew that’s what she wanted to pursue.

Mumm talked to the Cargill recruiters at the Career Fair and ended up being a Cargill HR Intern in Nebraska City, NE for the summer. In this position, she worked on a variety of projects including a FY17 turnover analysis and a HR transformation effectiveness assessment. For the FY17 analysis, Mumm analyzed the turnover data and provided the company with suggestions at the end of her internship. For the HR transformation effectiveness assessment, she worked with the HR intern in another location to hear about their new HR system. They created surveys in regards to the experience the Nebraska market employees had had with the new call center and ticket submitting system and presented their findings to the Nebraska and north central market leads.

“I have learned that human resources is the career path that I want to successfully pursue,” said Mumm. “I have a passion for working with people on personal and professional levels and solving problems in the workplace.”

Now that she has found this passion, Mumm is exploring the option of going to graduate school for human resources, something she hadn’t considered before.

“I want to love what I do, and working in human resources this summer was just that,” said Mumm. “I’m excited to see where I’m headed next!”
