“State of the European Union Address”
delivered by His Excellency Lauri Lepik, Ambassador of Estonia to the United States
The welcoming reception will start at 10:00 am prior to the address.
EU Day is a celebration of transatlantic relations and strives to promote a better understanding between the peoples of the US and the EU. The highlight of the celebration is the 'State of the EU Address.' Among potential topics will be current affairs in the EU and future prospects of transatlantic relations in the aftermath of recent elections in Europe and in the era of Trump administration. Every six months, on a rotating schedule, an EU member state becomes the presiding state and is leading the work of the EU Council. Estonia will hold the Presidency for the second half of 2017. This presidency is prioritizing ‘Unity through balance.’ More information is available at our EU Day webpage. |

On this 500th Anniversary of Luther’s 95 Theses, this installment of Conversations on Europe will look back on the impact of the Protestant Reformation on European society, culture, and politics. Experts on early-modern Europe will explore how the Reformation and attendant Counter-Reformation divided Europe, shaped European identities, and was felt in the lives of everyday Europeans.

A unique element of the European Union’s foreign policy is the creation of civil society networks that connect organizations from EU countries with similar organizations in other countries around the world. The objective of these networks is to strengthen relations between the EU and its international partners through the exchange of policies, ideas and norms. This talk examines the data collection process used to create network maps and assess network properties, and how we can use social network analysis to understand how these networks operate and their impact in foreign policy.

Internship opportunities at the European Parliament in Washington DC and Brussels The European Parliament Liaison Office with the US Congress (EPLO) is pleased to announce the launch of its next round of internships aimed at recent graduates and recent/current postgraduates. Up to six interns will be accepted in our Washington DC office from January 16th – April 15th, 2018, with an option to extend the internship for a further two months at our headquarters in Brussels. Applicants must be US citizens or have other pre-existing authorization to work in the US. The deadline to submit applications is October 31st, 2017. We require a CV in Europass format, a personal statement and two letters of recommendation directly sent by faculty members.
The internship offers a unique opportunity for students and young professionals with an interest in transatlantic policy! Please pass this information on to your relevant student and alumni networks.
