Gastroesophageal Malignancy Research

The DeGregorio Foundation seeks to promote and facilitate collaborative research on the pathogenesis, early diagnosis, and treatment of upper gastrointestinal malignancies. We support high quality, innovative, and transformative translational and bench research to improve the understanding of the biology of these diseases, identification of potential novel therapeutic targets, or in the development and evaluation of novel biomarkers for early diagnosis and treatment. Pre-clinical research, basic mechanistic studies, genomic/epigenomic studies, as well as epidemiologic studies may also be supported.

Award:            $250,000

Innovative Ovarian Cancer Research Pilot Studies

Founded in 1996, the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research provides funding for innovative research pilot studies, including grants to up-and-coming investigators, for early detection screening for ovarian cancer, and for the production of nationally and internationally attended research symposia on ovarian cancer.

To advance this mission, the center has issued a call for applications for its 2018 Scientific Scholar Awards. Through the program, the center will award grants of up $120,000 over two years to promising laboratory and clinical scientists interested in pursuing a career as an independent investigator in ovarian cancer research. Funds are for direct costs only; institutional overhead and indirect costs will not be included in the award.

Eligible applicants must have an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree, career goals focused on ovarian cancer, and, if a clinician, have completed their residency. Applicants should be at the post-doc/fellow, instructor, research assistant, or assistant professor level with no more than three to four years in any of these positions. Outstanding established scientists without a prior focus in ovarian cancer but looking to focus in the disease area are also encouraged to apply.

Deadline:         December 1, 2017 @ 4:00 PM Central

Cholesterol byproduct hijacks immune cells, lets breast cancer spread

High cholesterol levels have been associated with breast cancer spreading to other sites in the body, but doctors and researchers don’t know the cause for the link. A new study by University of Illinois researchers found that the culprit is a byproduct of cholesterol metabolism that acts on specific immune cells so that they facilitate the cancer’s spread instead of stopping it.

“Breast cancer impacts roughly 1 in 8 women. We’ve developed fairly good strategies for the initial treatment of the disease, but many women will experience metastatic breast cancer, when the breast cancer has spread to other organs, and at that point we really don’t have effective therapies. We want to find what drives that process and whether we can target that with drugs,” said Erik Nelson, a professor of molecular and integrative physiology who led the study.
